Remarked CPU?

I just got a Pentium III SECC2 750mhz chip from augustustech.com. I was just looking at the chip before I installed it in an old mothrboard that I had laying around. I noticed that there was a darkened, smooth out area on the chip where the S/N and various other markings were. I have read that people can use a small lazer to etch off the factory markings on a CPU and then lazer on whatever speed they want. I don't know if this is the case with my chip or not. To make things worse my motherboard is bad so I don't even know if the chip works correctly. Does anyone know some tell tale signs of a remarked SECC2 PIII?

does it state what the speed is on it and all ?

but without a MB to plug it into and see what it boots at it hard to tell.

I find it hard to believe anyone would remark a p3 in this day and age they are all Multiplier locked anyway.

Remarking would make no difference, since there is no way to change the multiplier or default fsb. Those are all on die on the P3. As long as it boots as what you bought, there is no issue. What I am saying is it is impossible, without some very detailed internal knowlege and lots and lots of money. ...then still, probably mostly impossible.
