remap mouse buttons without software

Is there anyway to remap ouse buttons without specific software? i know the logitich/seelseries/ect software that comes with gaming mice can do it but im looking for a way to do it without that

I have a logitech MX 518 mouse just plugged into my work laptop and i want to change what the back and foreward buttons do because i hate them, i want to reassign them both to "middle click". i want to do this without installing the logitech software

I also use a steelseries mouse with this laptop and either managed to do it for that one and forgot or it defaults to the setup i want

The only way to truely remap the buttons of a memoryless mouse without using any software is to change it with a custom firmware. Unfortunately I would imagine this to be nearly impossible for the average user without at least an insider in Logitech.

This impossibly simple script will do the remapping for you if all you didn't want was to install the bloatware of a mouse driver.
