With the ever tightening standards for fleet fuel economy, the build quality of a new car will continue to get worse(unless it's a 4Runner).

Soon, engines running on 5 weight oil will be a thing. CVTs, DI-only, computers in the engine bay will be the only choice left, and the mass adoption of electric might finally occur.

Then some massive grid catastrophe happens and people start wishing for some gas vehicles. .
Good insight you offer there, Criswell! And -- you're abso-freakin-lutely correct about the 4Runner, given the recent intel that I've gathered.

Well, my source is actually speedkar99 reviewing a pretty fresh and new 4runner(and some others on his channel).

Oh, Bonzai is likely a reference to Peter Bondra, is it not?

How long have I been in the forums? Did I come here in '04? Can't remember. But nobody ever asked me that.

Instead of my incognito picture-avatar, I had early come to this idea that I was going to put a thumbnail in my profile of Daffy Duck, with an Asian inflection to the eyes, wearing a head-band of the Rising Sun.

I didn't even spell it correctly. I think it would be "Ban-zai". But it's not "Bon-zai".

Afterthought: I'm not Asian. All my doctors are Asian, all my students during the 90s were Asian. I don't know what possessed me to put a sly-looking Loony-Toon in a thumbnail with a defeated battle-flag.

Maybe it was my Hondas, or my Isuzus. I cannot remember what possessed me to use that monniker, but that's what I did . . .

I guess if I were to change the pseudonym, it could be something like "GhostofAbbey" or "Abbey's Ghost" for the ghost of Ed Abbey. Then, I wouldn't have to change the thumbnail. Never saw him in sunglasses, though . . . And I never yet thought to have myself buried in the Sonoran Desert flouting my county coroner's mandate. I don't know if I have enough friends who could collaborate in stealing my body and carting me down to the Mexican border.. Would it matter to me or anyone, if people took hikes in Cabeza Prieta, looking for the crude grave marker that says "No Comment"? It would only matter to you if you completed your earthly life going to a Good place, whether or not the Good Place existed, and whether or not you believed in it, either way.

THE MYSTERY UNRAVELED -- PRAISE JEE_SUS FOR STETHOSCOPES AND PATIENCE

I wouldn't know if anyone has followed this or remembers how it originated and progressed.

This was all about a "noise" that seemed to arise when the AC compressor would kick on -- occasionally rattling a little bit when the AC would kick off. But it was all about the stress added to the crankshaft pulley wheel because of the AC.

So, you remember (maybe), I first concerned myself with the compressor. The stethoscope proved that the compressor is tip-top-A-OK. Then, I turned my attention to the other engine bolt-on peripherals -- power-steering pump and alternator. Also -- tip-top-A-OK.

The noise seemed most pronounced with the tip of the stethoscope applied to the forward end of the engine oil-pan. I was beginning to worry. This engine had always been amazingly perfect, is if nothing had been worn much within it over 190,000 miles. Crankshaft bearings? Something that would result in replacing the engine for $5,000 as an option for just dumping the car?

I wanted the mechanic to lube the body-mount points, door hinges and other things according to the shop-manual schedules of miles and maintenance attentions. This was a chump-change item; I had planned to pay for it this year; probably, it would be less than an hour's labor expense. But it was an opportunity for directing the mechanic to diagnose "THE NOISE".

It's the harmonic balancer on the exterior front of the crankshaft! A $180 part, entailing about $240 in labor charges.

THE TROOPER RIDES AGAIN! For a $550 outlay, this is a Christmas gift from ME to ME. I'm just happier than a pig in shit about it!
