I picked one up from frys on impulse thinking "...if this has BC...SCORE". However I don't want to open it because I'm not sure if I can return it to frys without a problem. The supervisor was hesitant and not sure what he was talking about. In the end he said "yeah yeah, even if you open it, 30 day return policy".

Riiight.

Anyways, On the side of the box it lists a serial number and a CPC unit id. I went around to see if this sucker has BC or not. The serial number starts with a "CK" as opposed to a "CE", and is then followed by nine digits. Not sure why - it seems perhaps CK is for the refurb ps3s? Nothing I found said that these things DO or don't have. I only found one report saying that it is really the 40/160gig no BC version with an 80gig HDD tossed inside. True, false? Can anyone illuminate the dark for me?

This this guy has SW BC compatibility, yay. If not, off he goes (and I don't want to open it because while looking for this information , I've found that their return policy is supposed to be a super hassle. They'll take the console and make sure it works and question you the whole way across. Much easier just to return a sealed box).

Some further work shows that the two 80 gig versinos have the following SN

CECHKxx and CECHExx and finally CECHLxx. Only Exx has BC.

I want to say what I have is the Kxx, but mine doesn't CK directly, unless the middle ECH is automatically assumed (which would be odd).

Does it have 4 usb ports on the front or the memory card support? If yes, then yes. Otherwise, no Sony chucked out those features when they stripped out the BC.

Did they even make an 80gb model without bc? If it has four (4) USB ports on the front, then it can play ps2 games.

The 80gb models were software emulation. They have a physical ps2 gpu but lack the emotion engine CPU. Bc isn't as good as the 60/20gb (about 80 percent vs 100 percent), but it's better than nothing.

Nope. It only has 2 USB, and on the console clearly says "CECHK01-A"

Off to frys ye will be returned!

I already have a slim so I see no need to keep this guy.

I should have gotten that mgs4 bundle long ago lol.

For those wanting a PS3 though and don't care about BC, this isn't that bad. 240 with 1 year SCEA warranty. OF course, rumors of a further price drop makes me want to wait a little bit.

It's tough but if you're willing to keep your eyes open you can snag a deal. I got my 120 gig slim from Sears with 20% cashback...effectively $240 with cashback, plus tax on $300 (was about $18 for me).

Anything with extra effort is possible ;)

Right now I'm just wondering why Sony doesn't package a PS2 emulator, sell it for 20-30 bucks on the store, and enjoy profits. OF course they could do it with each individual PS2 game and make more $$$$, but then where are all the ps2 games designed to bring profit? :p I see plenty of PS1 games, and the PS3 has PS1 BC.

But yeah, back to the point: anything that is CK really CECHK.

Is that possible? mmntech said that the 80 gig version had a ps2 gpu. I know he also said software emulation, but I'm guessing that's only part of the equation.

I'm guessing that most of it is business related; the backwards compatible models were EOL'd because they cost too much. Coding such a download as you suggest is probably impossible or not profitable. And I suppose games that are well received, such as God of War, will get ps3 remakes.
That said, I would probably buy a ps3 version of Okami (at the right price).

Can't be that expensive or impossible; this isn't PCSX2 trying to reverse engineer things on their own and the aid of some public (and probably) not so public docs that still isn't fully complete. Sony has all the internal docs and the work on the Ps2. Nothing about it isn't known to them. Hell if that was the case I'd hire some open source version that does the PS2 currrently, make them sign an NDA, and pay them to do it on the PS3. At 30 bucks a pop, if dev is 500k, you need to sell around 17k copies to break even. 17k in sales is nothing and easily achieved. Even if it was 1 million, 30-40k is still easily achievable worldwide.

But yeah I think it was to cut costs as opposed to make money on Ps2 titles.
Here is to hoping that BC comes one day!
