relocation = tax write off?

I live in Orlando, but I'll be moving to Denver for a new job in the next few weeks.

Since the company isn't willing to pay relocation, it'll be out-of-picket for me...but that's gonna suck, especially with a truck rental and towing-platform for my car. A guy I work with told me that relocating for a new job can be written off in taxes, so long as I save receipts for things like gas, hotel, food, rental trucks, etc...

Two questions then:
1) Is this true? Some other people have told me it is...but I figure there's got to be someone on ATOT who's had experience with this.

2) I won't be movnig straight from Orlando to Denver. I have to first drive up to Wisconsin to grab some stuff from my folks' house, and then on to Denver afterwards. Can I write off both trips, as it's all part of the process for me to relocate?

Thanx for any help/info.

Big tax write off if company is not paying....

And even if they are paying, the parts where they didn't pay, you can also write that off.

1) yep, it's true, you can claim moving expenses if it's over like 50 miles or something
2) sounds shady and it'll probably sound shady to the irs too...
3) taxes were supposed to be in on the 15th... even though refunds can be claimed whenever 😉

it's funny, you can write off your travel and lodging but not food, wait for CPA or eagle and they can help you some more.

hmmmm....this is an interesting article.

I easily pass the 50 mile test (duh)...and yes, I will pass the 39 week test. So apparently I don't have to itemize things anymore...or something like that? So maybe both trips will lump into one big trip? It's more like I'm stopping in Wisconsin than moving to Wisconsin.

...maybe....just...maybe 😕

is the tax write off worth it? I'd basically told myself I won't change jobs unless I get reloc...I figured the tax write off will be negligible unless it comes out as lot of money back on your return.
