Relocation advice for Montgomery Co. Maryland (Silver Spring)

my neighbor rents out her basement. if you're interested, i could pm you her number and you can see if she needs a tenant.

it's an awesome area and she's a very nice lady. plus, my family is right across the cul de sac and they're the kind of people who'd bend over backwards to help you with anything you need (i guess that's where i get it). if you're in a bind, you could always hit my parents/brother up for some help. unfortunately, i'm suck in crap-ass st. louis 🙁

i've been out to dc plenty of times. the last two times i was in woodley, we ventured out to dupont and i was hit on by a dude in a coffee shop. it didn't bother me or anything and i let the guy know that i had a gf, but my friends will never let it go how i got hit on back to back in a coffee shop the past two times we were in dupont.

Whats wrong with Columbia? There's alot more to do than chain restaurants. TGIF? Who the hell goes there to eat anyways? I live in Columbia, and theres no where Id rather be. It was also ranked #4 on best places to live in America. I posted about that a month ago.

No, Columbia does not have any night life at all. It's right in between the two of the best cities for nightlife on the east coast, Baltimore and DC. Who the hell wants to live in a city known for it's nightlife? I want to live comfortably in a city where everything I need is within a couple minutes from my house, and I mean everything from the grocery store to the hospital. And if I want to go out and party, all I have to do is drive 25 minutes and I have my pick between Baltimore or DC.

No, Columbia does not have any night life at all. It's right in between the two of the best cities for nightlife on the east coast, Baltimore and DC. Who the hell wants to live in a city known for it's nightlife? I want to live comfortably in a city where everything I need is within a couple minutes from my house, and I mean everything from the grocery store to the hospital. And if I want to go out and party, all I have to do is drive 25 minutes and I have my pick between Baltimore or DC.

he doesn't want to live in the city, he wants to live CLOSE to the city. he wants to be able to walk to the metro and take the metro to the city, not drive 25 minutes, go party and get wasted and have some drinks, and then hav eto worry about driving 25 minutes back home.

i personally would never want to live in DC myself, but I would like to live in a surrounding mini-city if you call it, like arlington or bethesda. they have their own bars and night life you could walk to, or you could cab or take the metro to DC for more action. but in columbia, you have to rely on a someone to drive you there and back, and going out to a bar or club and NOT drinking is like having sex but not finishing. it's just a tease.

oh and you made me laugh calling Baltimore one of the best cities for night life on the east cost 😀 😀

i'm not bashing it, i'm stating facts. sure if you want to raise a family and have some decent schools, colubmbia may be a good place to live. but if you are young and want to be close to nightlife, it's not a fun place to live.

and he said he wants to live around silver spring in montgomery county, not howard county near columbia 😛

yeah, i remember - purebeast and i spent a fair amount of time ragging on columbia in there. i thought that i should jump in here to save a guy in his 20's who's looking to have a good time from moving to columbia.

chains in columbia (off the top of my head):

don pablo's, famous dave's, la madeleine, romano's macaroni grill, chipotle, baja fresh, chick-fil-a, mcdonalds, cheesecake factory, uno's pizza, pf chang's, carrabba's, hard times cafe, red robin, noodles and company, bertucci's, ledo pizza, jerry's, taco bell, chicken out, panera, olive garden, TGI friday's, applebee's, bob evans, quiznos, burger king, wendy's, etc, etc, etc

that's just WAYYY too many chains per capita. i'm hardly an anti-corporation hippy, but everytime i set foot in columbia, i feel like a mindless zombie. <shudder>

I did the reverse commute from Silver Spring up towards the Laurel area. You'll very rarely hit traffic and it'll take about 25 mins, plus you get to watch the traffic going the other way. Columbia Pike (29) will be the same way but you will hit some traffic lights on the way since they're still working on that road. I would take 495->95, every now and then there would be an accident and you'd hit traffic but that's to be expected.

Anyways Silver Spring is great for the reverse commute to that area you get the best of both worlds... metro access and an easy commute.

Okay, looks like the consensus is that if I don't want a roommate (and I don't) my best bet is Silver Spring. It is also closer to Hwy. 29 and less of a commute than Bethesda. In fact, I found out today my new manager lives out there and he says the commute is pretty easy.

eits, thanks for the offer but I'm really looking to live on my own or with someone I already know. Truth is I've got a sister, cousins, and tons of friends in the DC area already, though most are in the city or on the Virginia side of the beltway.

avoid the virginia side like the plague (unless you like sean hannity and think you're better than everyone else because you go to church every sunday... then, you'd fit right in).
