Relocating to Atlanta

I've been trying to get a transfer to our Atlanta NOC, I interviewed Wednesday and they offered me the job after the interview. I consulted with the wife and accepted the next day.

I currently live in N Cali am married with 4 children. My main purpose for the move is bigger/better house. With a small part for the upward mobility in the new location.

I will be keeping my current pay and they will be paying for the re-location. I'll be selling the house in California and taking about 100k for a new house in Atlanta. I have been looking in the McDonough area and like the area and houses. Does anybody have any other suggestions for outlying cities in Atlanta. The new work location is in Ellenwood-South East Atlanta so they have to be south or east.

Thanks.

I used to live in western Atlanta, and don't know a whole lot about the south/east side. Sorry. Maybe PM Fausto?

McDonough is fine since you will be working in the Ellenwood area. If you want to be a bit closer try the Stockbridge area. Either way you get a killer house for not a lot of money (relatively speaking).

Update: Oh yeah...I wouldn't really go east because traffic is too bad in the morning and afternoon. Even though you can hop on 285 it's still not worth it. Stay on the South/Southeast side.

I'm afraid I really don't know much about the southside area of Atlanta. Your commute from the Decatur area (where I live) actually wouldn't be too bad tho since you'd be going mostly against the flow of traffic each day. You'll definitely get a lot more house for your money in the areas 300M mentioned, but they definitely lack the character of the areas intown.

75 north below the city could get a little busy in the morning. I'm not that familar with Ellenwood, but I live about 15 minutes northeast of McDonough. Going by where mapsonus put the flag for ellenwood your best bet probably would be stockbridge. If you go as far McDonough it'd be a crap shoot as to how the traffics moving on 75. It took me about 50 minutes once going between Mcdonough and stockbridge going to the airport, And that was in the evening when you think the traffic would be light in the direction. Stockbridge would give you the options on the non interstate routes. Although I doubt 675 would be the busy.

Edit. School wise, go to Fayetteville, no doubt.

I probably wouldn't look at Loganville. You'd never get to and from home in traffic. Fayetteville is a decent option since it's on the southside. Also as Fausto said Decatur wouldn't be bad (just make sure it's the better parts of Decatur as there are many parts).

Is the place you work outside Atlanta proper? I lived inside Atlanta, and I drove to work in Marietta. The advantage to this was that the worst of the traffic was always going the opposite direction I was going, and my commute time was always 10 minutes or less.

You're probably getting a pretty decent deal since the cost of living in CA is a lot higher than the Hotlanta area. Just keep in mind that you can sink a lot of money into a house anywhere you go... I'd probably try to find a modest neighborhood rather than going for a high-end community. I've got family that lives in Peachtree City for instance....the houses are too expensive and too close together. Just get a good real estate agent and do some research and driving around.

675 is only backed up when there is a wreck or really bad fog (which then leads to a wreck since people drive like possessed demons. there are only 2-3 spots on 675 where cops sit and they are easy to spot

There aren't any houses that are nice/big actually IN Atlanta itself that are that cheap. More like a million bucks heh.

I guess there'd be a small commute, but you'd have to live in some suburbs nearby. I don't know where though heh, I just stay on this campus.

If he's from the bay area, I doubt he'll even notice :p

Heh...ya I've been to Atlanta a couple of times, really no comparison to the I80 corridor.

Shlong: I'm married with 4 kids so a condo would be too small.

Go ahead and take Loganville out of your decision, I cannot even begin to tell you how long it would take for you to get to/from work. You would hit just about the worst roads (very, very bad traffic).

Maybe look into a condo intown. Metropolis in Midtown, Spire Midtown. New development in the downtown area near centennial olympic park called centennial hill. Also a lot of residential & shops will be opening in atlantic station (ikea, dilliard's, etc). Prices aren't outrageous like intown in other cities, you can find a nice place for $150-$300K.
I think you missed the part about him having four kids.

With 4 kids, dunwoody (access to marta subway if you dont want to deal with traffic) /alpharetta area has good schools & good houses. $300K would get you a nice 3,500 square foot house with 4-5 bedrooms & 3 baths.
