Reload this Page Can you do Raid5 in software mode without formatting?

I am running a fileserver with Windows Server 2008 (hip hurray for MS Acadamy) and would like to run raid for better data security, but that brings me 2 issues, I dont want to format all my current data as I dont have any place to backup while I make the current drives raid, second I keep adding drives and I will have to spread the drives across different controllers as 1 big controller for 10+ drives is very costly.

So is it possible to make my drives run Raid5 without formatting and with the possibility to add more drives as I get more space? Also what happens with a software raid if I reinstall OS?
I dont really care about speed as a single drives speed is sufficient atm anyway but if speed is boosted I wont complain
