Facebook: I have several friends who sometimes post those "prayer requests", but also sometimes other types of circular hoaxes or false information.

Because so many of these are potential security risks (not to mention annoying and false), I politely inform them that its a hoax or just false, then give them links to Snopes or similar resources and encourage people to have little healthy skepticism about these things because so many scams and cons depend on a culture of unquestioning (or blissful) trust, just like the "prayer requests" that people unquestioningly forward or repost.

So today, one friend reposts a "prayer request" that is confirmed to be false, and I do my thing. One of her friends replies (and I quote)...

"Maybe it is a hoax, but it only takes a moment to say a prayer! I wouldn't want to take the chance!!!"

WTF? Notice this isn't a matter of ignorance. She is literally stating "I'm aware these are hoaxes or false but I'm going to do it anyway!"

I've been coming to terms with religion. It's not for me, but if it lets people live for something, or makes them happy, go for it.

It's all shenanigans to me, but, I won't stop them from doing something that makes them happy.

Playing video games is pointless, so is religion. Video games make me happy.

Fuck it.

No that is not LITERALLY what she is saying. She said "MAYBE IT IS..." which also implies that "MAYBE IT ISN'T"

In her mind she is just hedging on the safe side and saying the prayer that takes her literally 10 secs. No harm no foul. If you don't want to, you don't have too.

You took more time posting it here (for troll bait as you know damned well ANY religion thread is), and incorrectly comprehending her statement for that matter, than it took her to say the prayer.

Doesn't want to take the chance of what...God failing to become aware of someone's plight unless he gets a mass-broadcast of prayer requests for them? Or maybe he is all-knowing, but will just go "meh, too busy today" and pass them over for a miracle unless the intercessory prayer volume reaches...??

Bravo. This is the mentality everyone should have. (granted this should not be the mentality towards extremist religions of course)

I proved it was false by supplying supportive evidence. Additionally, I stated that I had been on the internet for 16 years and had NEVER encountered a single legit prayer request unless it was someone I personally knew sending me a communication about someone else I personally knew, which she did not attempt to dispute or contradict. To which, she is saying "Who cares? I'm going to annoy everyone and possibly expose them to a security risk, anyway." Because....?

Well actually, the friend thanked me for the info. It was one of HER non-mutual friends who left the comment on the post. The friend who posted the prayer request isn't a repeat or serial offender. Its her first that I can recall.

Do you like my fresh new avatar? You know it's me when you see the gay colors.

I'm not really a troll, just sometimes.

I would like it better with a fedora on it, yes. :awe:

Bleh, time to go to my desktop. It's like 40 feet and you're making me get up. Seriously I am angry with you.

I can't believe I neglected the fedora. I was a part of that thread!

I'm more curious as to how you think this thread was going to turn out. It's nothing more than troll bait.

Facebook: check
Religion: check
Arrogance: check

Troll on!

I'm what AT would describe as religious, and I have a lot of religious friends on FB. It bugs me when hoaxes are perpetuated because people don't want to take the time to check. It's just a good practice to know your source, regardless of whether you're religious or not. (I would argue that the politically-inclined are more guilty of this than the religious.) I am a prolific poster of Snopes links on Facebook statuses.

No, it's definitely a matter of ignorance. Both yours and hers.

She believes in an invisible pedophile in the sky
You think people like that can be logical

Check! I haven't decided whether its good or bad that I'm still able to be amazed at how willfully stupid or irrational people decide to be.

I consider my self religious, and have many friends on facebook I would consider religious, but I've never received a "prayer request" on FB, unless it was for someone who I knew who was in a car accident (and that was only once). Guess it depends on your religious friends.

On Facebook, you get what you deserve for friending people.
