Except when it costs an innocent child their life, like those examples where nutty parents didn't seek medical treatment for a curable illness due to religious beliefs that dictate it's in "gods hands".

Otherwise I think any consenting adult winning a Darwin award, for religious reasons or otherwise, is great stuff. Idiocy is by no means the sole domain of the religious.

Darwin awards are only for when people's own stupidity gets them killed, the bolded above as you described is just fucking murder in my eyes.

One of the things that makes me roll my eyes more than anything is that even when stuff like this happens, God can do no wrong, or make any mistakes. "This is what the Lord intended" is the response to incidents like this. There's a built-in excuse for literally anything that goes awry.

Once you've resigned yourself to the fact that the world is full of idiots, this means nothing in the scheme of things...and for some to draw broad extrapolations from such minutia only serves to reinforce the fact that the world is, indeed, full of idiots.

The world is not full of idiots.

*yawn*......who are we to judge a God?? lol

I feel badly for Brock & his family.

Snake handlers have been doing their thing for a very long while. I remember seeing a documentary some years ago in which the author theorized that the snakes are traumatized, overwhelmed by the chanting, singing & loud music, generally rendered docile. Bites are apparently rare or they wouldn't be able to keep doing it.

Deeply religious people often seek rapturous & intense religious experiences through a variety of mechanisms, this being among the most extreme.

no worse then the eco-KOOKs running around with their gospel of cooling / warming / sky is falling alarmist sermon.

Keep spouting that discredited-a-million-times-bullshit about cooling/warming.

Also, it's fun to see someone crying about scientists who discuss climate change as "sky is falling alarmism", when your main crying point about climate change solutions is that if we do anything, the economy will crash! Oh no! The end of the economy!

Brilliant.

Are you kidding?

Sorry OP, this story isn't even anywhere near the level of stupid and crazy the dogma of the religilous is able to produce. Holy rollers down south have been dying from snake bite and strychnine for awhile now, it's not really anything new or unprecedented.

While it's nice to see the religilous inspiring secular humanism like this, I give it a 2/10 on the wtfometer. Kinda tame compared to castration, murder, etc.

Oh don't worry, spewing bullshit is all that idiot does. Facts and logic only confuse his kind, I'd save my time for posters who are taken seriously if I were you. 😉

If they were really serious about God protecting them, they would be using wolverines!

Seriously, they need to pick something safer like skunks

We are the inventors of that God. That is who we are.

That reminds me of a story about the contest between the Greeks and the Persians over which were the greatest artisans to settle that dispute.

A curtain was put down the middle of a large building between each side. The Greeks on one side created a work of unsurpassable elegance and beauty while on the other the Persians created a mirror, and when the curtain was pulled nobody could tell who won.

Nobody they knew. Should I feel sorry for ancient cultures that didn't know any better or for the ancient culture followers today that don't know any better? The former is pitiful, but the latter even more so, for unlike the former they only have themselves to blame.
