"The study found a steady rise in those claiming no religious affiliation"

That is hardly claiming they renounce God.

If people in a Middle Eastern country renounced Allah and religion in mass, it would probably result in a holy Jihad against them.

That's what usually happens. In Algeria some 200,000 were killed in last 10 years for being not quite Muslim enough. It's a powerful cult for propagation since they just kill you for leaving, make you born unto it, and breed like rabbits. Jesus had nothing on Mo.

Wow! Great news! About time... People have grown a brain to think for themselves! I might have to jump ship and move!

Given the size of governments, people replaced God with Man. Replaced Church with Government. You think fascism leaves us better off?

Canada's head of state is the British Monarch, who must be the head of a specific church. If you cling on to such beliefs, then you can't make religion extinct. If you demand that your head of state be of one specific religion, then you truly are among the most religious in the world.

I know very well who the head of state of Canada is. It doesn't matter and you are so far off it isn't even funny.

He is basically the equivalent of the crazy cat lady on the Simpsons... worth a quick laugh but that's about it.

It's inevitable really. People don't like having a virgin in a dress telling them what to do.

That's why the used to sacrifice them to the nearest volcano god or whatever. We need to revive the really old traditions like burning witches and sacrificing virgins if religion is going to compete with football, hollywood, video games, and other violent entertainment.

I didnt read the article yet but I bet its mostly all European nations on there. Not only is their faith in religion going extinct but so is their culture itself, Europeans are a dying breed since they dont have enough children to keep their population from dying out. Add in very heavy immigration from the Muslim world and the pegs are all in place for them [their Christian religion, culture etc] to be swept away by Islam sooner or later.

It seems accurate to me. Even if the people don't believe in fairy tales anymore, the government mandates the existence of the fairy tale. It can never go extinct in those countries because of the nature of their governments.

It's a very poorly performed study.

Some of you appear to think that a reduction in self-identified religious identification is an indication that religion is or will become "extinct".

Personally I think humans have evolved to have an innate need to "believe" in something as a mechanism for coping with fear and uncertainty, or to handle things humans can't comprehend or easily explain. They want to believe in something greater than themselves as a way to cope with life. Plenty of people zealously believe in things that are not really "religions" per se.

Also, don't fool yourself: if you remove organized religion from the equation, something else will take it's place, and it might be worse than any religion. Lack of religion does not a land of "progressive" milk and honey make. "no religion" governments have not exactly been bastions of human dignity over the decades.

Human beings need philosophy--they need a guide to life. The question is, will it be rational or not? If religion fades away, hopefully it will be replaced by a philosophy of reason.

That doesn't make any sense. Humans are by nature not completely logical or rational. Thus, thinking removing religion will open the door to a philosophy of reason makes no sense.

One can only hope. Not going to happen in this recently extremist religious nation.

Sadly, you're probably correct. I think that humans have the ability to choose reason and rationality but simply won't since not enough possess high enough IQs to make that choice. In that case, we are doomed since humanity will either end up destroying itself or destroying the Earth's ability to support large quantities of human life. We're already doing an excellent job of overpopulating ourselves into mass poverty.

What's wrong with being Islamphobic? I'm Naziphobic too.

Why stop there. If Islam is going to take over the world then obviously the only way to compete is to be even more xenophobic! The Church of the Xenophobe!

I'm pretty much against anything that's group think first of all which includes all religion. Next this one is particularly barbaric and doesn't recognize institutions or human rights we have been indoctrinated with, most born out of Age of Reason ie. man made. Instead women are treated like vommit, minorities and free thinkers are too, has cruel and unusal punishment for even minor infractions, offers total regulation of life, etc. Damn right I'm an Islamphobe it's against my interests.

In particular the year I lived in SA I was pissed at 5am calls to prayer over loud speakers every morning since I'm a late riser.
