How is that stirring up anything? If you read the news a lot of people around the world hate Jews and I want to know why. Look back at World War II and Germany.

Okay, well .. why do a lot of people hate Jews? Is it because most of them are succesful or is it a religious reason?

I started this thread because I just read the Quran. I didn't like anything I read because it kept telling me to be very afraid of God (do all religions say this?). It kept saying God is great and all powerful like in every paragraph (I don't like that part it just sounds like any king back in the old days trying to tell everyone he was all powerful and dangerous to make people worship him). It also made it seem like men are more superior than women. It doesn't mention any "killing" people or anything in it, but it does say if one is not Muslim to try to convert them. It doesn't say people who are not Muslim are going to hell, but it does say if you have tried to learn about Islam and do not believe in it then God will not forgive you. It accepts Christianity and Judiasm, but it says those people do not know any better and will be shown the truth after this life.

I don't believe in Islam (I am not bashing Muslims. I respect you for your beliefs as you could very well be right). I am just trying to figure out if there is a religion out there I can accept. I never learned about religion and my parents never told me anything about it either. All I knew was that there was a God and he/she/it was watching over all of us.

I just believe if you were told what to believe in at an early age you will most likley believe in that religion very strongly. For me it wasn't the case. I am 21 and I get to make up my mind and not 6 having my parents tell me what is right.

I havn't read the Bible, but I'm going to start soon and see what I think.

Aimster, I don't belong to any religion, so my opinion has very little to do with what I find to be the "true faith," but your personality strikes me as fitting The Religious Society of Friends (quakers).

Might want to have a look at some eastern religions, too. More into personal enlightenment than keeping in line with the edicts of the man upstairs.

Our Mission

Our mission is to lead people to Jesus and help them grow in their relationship with Him. We strive to deliver compelling evidence for the Christian faith to seekers, believers, and a skeptical world. We seek to be non-threatening, practical and informative, using the technology of the Internet to answer tough questions about God, Jesus Christ, the Bible and Christianity.

Not trying to imply anything except that I am sure some of those dates are fairly accurate but some others are not and in either case, the source is not neutral.

EDIT: The title of the summary is a bit misleading. If those are the important dates as far as the website is concerned, I guess that's fair enough. Those are definitely not the "Origins" of religion.

For Christians, it's that there's been a couple hundred years of people constantly saying that the jews killed Christ. It's always rather glossed over that His death had to happen anyway. Also helping this was around the middle ages, the Church in Europe outlawed moneylending (I belive it was something like that) by Christians. Thus, the Jews were some of the few people who had the capacity and were willing to do it, and generally did so at higher interest rates to non-jews. That bit of business caused huge resentment in Europe. And, as human nature shows so well, grudges of that kind are quite slow to die.

As for Moslems, that goes back to the time of Abraham. Abraham's two sons were Issac (promised by god and delivered) and Ishmael (Abraham's own doing when he got impatient for a kid. Gotta love concubines). Anyway, God's true blessing for Abraham's one true son went to Issac. Ishmael and his mother were cast out, sent away. Thus Ishmael became the founder of the Moslem religion, and his followers have always held the grudge against the Jews for taking what they always saw as their rightful place as Abraham's first born son.

For Islam and Mohammad, I believe that their hatred is pretty much the same as the Moslems, as Islam grew out of that belief system.

Man is a Religious Animal. Man is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion -- several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven.... The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.

man..what a question!!

now after reading all that, I am forced to roll up my sleeves and put in my two cents...not that my two cents or anybody's two cents matter much on this forum..because religion is just one of those things.

First of all, I just hope you realize how lucky you were that you weren't one of those children (many I know and me to a lesser extent) who had religion forced down their throats. I think many people can deal with that while many people indepenedent side rebells agains such ritualistic religion. To me..it is the rituals that are the most horrid part of such organized religion. I believe in a God and I guess I believe in all those prophets you guys talked about...but what irkes me is the way each religion tries to mold its members into a certain way of life. Because we are not considered to be smart enough to rule our own lives. If you look at it socially, it make sense; perhaps that is the only way to keep order in this chaotic world where a lot people seem to want to kill each other..shrug. The other day someone on this forum said...people would be fighting even if religion wasn't around and I do agree.

Even though I am not the most religious of people, I feel compelled to defend islam and the other religions. I think the root of religion is justified even though it still requires that leap of faith. I would not be surprised if people did not believe in God if they weren't raised; I personally feel trapped. It is a very nice safety net. However I believe it is human nature to take something nice and ruin it..grin..j/k. However religion (judaism, christianity, and islam) has been shaped over hundreds and hundreds of years by people. What we practice now barely resembles what was when religion first came out. For example, the bible has been written, rewritten, rewritten some more, retranslated, rewritten, retranslated again...many times. So what we have now have changed over the years due to simple mistranslations but more like misinterpretations. On the other hand Quran has remained the same as the "word of god". However. the cultural aspect of islam has been shaped greatly by the political powers, cultures of the regions it spread to, and interpretation of the quran. Quran at times can be rather cryptic, and it is sometimes hard to interprate it.

I am not sure how many of you actually know multiple languages. I know Bangla, English, and Spanish...used to be fluent in Farsy (persian). And from personal experiences I can tell you it can be very difficult to translate somethings precisely into another language. You can say something in society and have it mean one thing; but if you say the exact same thing in another language it means something totally different. I do believe this puts a huge hamper on things when reading the Torah, Bible, and the Quran; and how these books have been misrepresented in the past.

Also, another comment about how you said that women seem to be second class in islam. I am not sure if it is true or not. I would however like to point out that each religion has been shaped over the years by society...and a very patriarchal society on top of that. People comment on muslim women; yet they forget to look at christian women just a hundred years ago. There isn't much difference. And, I know people in america have a preconception of what a muslim women is; and I think it is rather bullshit. There obviously many middle easter women who wear hejabs; thats great. But there are many many many of us muslim women who do not; who are not from middle east and have very different cultural background. And many of us question our religion as well. But again, I think that goes for any religion..there are those dye hard devotees and those who are willing to keep their eyes open (we are the ones probably going to hell in any religion though...bites her lips)

Also, I know one muslim lady scholar who said that if the quran was interpretated by women scholars than the islam as we know it today would be a lot different. I say this because you are read the quran; but you must also realize that you are reading someone's interpretation of the quran. If you pick up any Quran in different languages, it can seem to have different meaning. I have tried reading it in both bangla and english; now if I was smart I would actually learn arabic and know what it truely meant.

I just graduated form college and I have been taking some religion classes for my own curiosity's sake. I feel like I have to know for certain if I wish to remain as I am or if I want to change how I go about my life. So if you want to talk some more..please pm me.

Wow..I'll quit now..didn't mean to type so much.

Here's some good info about Christianity...

ESSENTIAL CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE:

The Old and New Testaments are the inspired, infallible and authoritative Word of God. In the Bible, we find the revelation of God's will for the salvation of men, and the Divine and final authority for the Christian life.

There is one God, the Creator of all things, who is infinitely perfect and eternally existent in three Persons-Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ is true God and true man. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He led a sinless life and died on the cross as a sacrifice for the sins of all men. He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is now at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest and Advocate.

Man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is therefore lost. Only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained. The shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only grounds for justification and salvation.

Water baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances to be observed by the Church during the present age. However, they are not to be regarded as a means of salvation.

The present supernatural ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. During this age, He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service.

Born-again, Spirit-filled believers should maintain a consistent study of God's Word and prayer life in order to grow in their relationship with God and to know Him more fully.

The true Church is composed of all those who are born again. Through this new birth, we are united together in the body of Christ. Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the Church. Every local church is autonomous and has the right under Christ to decide and govern its own affairs.

The return of Jesus Christ is imminent and will be personal. The certainty of His return has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.

The believer will be bodily resurrected from the dead to everlasting joy with the Lord, and the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting, conscious punishment.

HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN:

I. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT ALL OF US ARE SINNERS.

Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
The Bible word for sin, HAMARTIA, means to "miss the mark."

ALL of us miss the mark and when we do, the Bible calls that sin.

"There is no one righteous, not even one." (Romans 3:10)

If someone says they haven't sinned, the Bible says they're deceived.

"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." (I John 1:8)

The Bible teaches that God holds us accountable for our sins.

"In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent." (Acts 17:30)

II. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES FOR OUR SINS.

Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

If we don't deal with our sins, God will.
"But unless you repent you too will all perish." (Luke 13:3)
III. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT WE NEED A SAVIOR TO DEAL WITH OUR SINS.

Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

II Corinthians 5:21, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Jesus is the only One Who can help us with our sins.
"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" (John 14:6)
"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." (John 3:36)

God offers us forgiveness for our sins and eternal life in Christ Jesus.
"For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come." (II Corinthians 5:17)

IV. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT WE HAVE TO DO TWO THINGS TO BE SAVED: CONFESS AND SURRENDER.

Romans 10:9-10, "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."

Luke 9:23, "Then He said to them all: 'If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me."
The Bible word for confess, HOMOLOGEO, means "to say the same thing."

God wants us to "say the same thing" about Jesus that He says.
1. Jesus is God's Son.
2. Jesus died on the cross, was buried and three days later, rose from the grave to save us from our sins.
3. Jesus is not the best way to get to Heaven, He's the only way to get to Heaven.

God wants us to completely surrender to Jesus as Lord.

There are four things involved in surrender.

1. Repentance
This means to have a change of life. It's a complete turnaround. Instead of living for yourself and following the ways of the world, you want to repent of your sins, follow the Lord and live for Him; and it includes every area of your life.
2. Baptism
Baptism is the outward declaration of an inward reality. Because we have confessed with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead...because we believe Jesus is Who the Bible says He is and that He did what the Bible says He did...we want to publicly declare our identification with Him. There is no other physical act we can do that identifies us more with Jesus than water baptism.
3. Church
We need to get involved in a Bible-believing, Bible-teaching church. This is important for at least three reasons:

a. It helps develop our faith. (Romans 10:17)
b. It helps us develop quality, life-long friendships.
c. It gives us purpose for the future.

4. Obedience
This means we do what God tells us to do on a daily basis.
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." (I John 1:7)
V. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT ONCE A PERSON IS READY TO CONFESS CHRIST AS LORD AND SURRENDER COMPLETELY TO HIM, THEY CAN BE SAVED.

Romans 10:9, "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Romans 10:13, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
You should pray and ask God to forgive you for your sins and ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior.

You should schedule a time to be baptized.

You should get involved in a Bible-believing, Bible-teaching church and start living a life of obedience to God and His Word.

If you want to know about these religions, go to their respective places of worship and ask those who have devoted their lives to the religions. Do not ask people on an internet forum devoted to computers.

I think hatred for Jews is similar to hatred for Gypsies. Both are peoples without(prior to Israel for Jews) Homelands, both have their own culture, and both live(or lived) outside of the Laws of where they resided. These types of things still rile people up, but not as much as it used to.
