I'm thinking about getting another JB series drive (probably the 1200JB). The one I bought originally was DOA. The reason I'm so interested in reliability is because I've gone through countless IBM 75/60GXP drives and I want something that will work for a while and not die on me after 7 months.

This is a combined poll, where 800JB, 1000JB, and 1200JB are all being considered the same type of drive.

I got a VERY loud 800JB from NewEgg. I RMA'd it back to WD and they sent me a brand new 100JB and it is whisper quiet :D

Interesting. What kind of noise are they making, and are they in a RAID?

No it's not a RAID array, just a single drive (I have to setup multiple systems you know ;)).

It's pretty darn loud at idle, but the seeking noise level is virtually silent. The Seagate BIV in my main system is virtually silent at idle and slightly noisier at seeking. Overall though, it's quieter than the 1200JB (of course, I'd have to test quite a number of BIV and 1200JB drives to accurately conclude what the differences are).

The 1200JB I had was loud at idle compare dto my Barracuda IV & D740X "L". The seek time was comprable to the cuda, but the sustained was faster than both. Overall I was happier with the 120GXP.

I had to RMA one, an 80 GIG with the date on the sticker as being Jun 13, 2002. The one they sent me was brand spanking new, right off the presses i think. It was dated July 17, 2002. So far it works fine.

I have 2 120 gb JB drives in a non RAID setup and they are whisper quiet. They are probably the quietest drives I've ever owned outside the OEM Maxtor 5400 rpm 20 gb drive I got with a Dell 2100 series computer. I can't hear that drive even when I'm listening for it.

Reliability? 2 drives, 3 months old and they work flawlessly so far.

Yup, there seems to be a definite inconsistency in JB drives, because mine are by no means quiet.

Heh, mine is the noisest thing in my computer! Still quieter than the IBM 75GXP's that I had though.

I have one 120 JB drive that I got through the dell deal a while back. It has been working great every since I got it. It is not loud to me, but I'm comparing it to my fairly lound 40 gig WD.

I am paranoid now, since I had to RMA the first one. It just died on my after like hours. It pretty much stopped powering up since the BIOS didn't detect it anymore. I got a blue screen in Windows 2000 and when I rebooted, the bios didn't detect it ever again.

Anywaz, I have heard that some people have it running fine after 1 month and then it begins to crap out on them again. I am hopeful that since my drive is so new, WD has fixed whatever problems they had.

But since I am paranoid, I have yet to put personal data on my hdd. I am waiting for that 1-2 month benchmark, lol.

1000JB, quiet and flawless. Has run 24x7 for a couple months.
