does such a car exist???
not counting hybrids, im looking for an used sedan, sized like a camry, with good gas mileage.
which model and year would you suggest?

The closest thing I can think of is a Jetta TDI. The 2006-2010 model years seem to be OK in reliability, and gives really good fuel economy.

Hyundai Sonata with the I4 will pull low 30's. Decent value used, and by most accounts pretty reliable over the last several years.

I have a Lexus IS250 awd (awd hurt my mpg slightly) but I get about 33mpg on a 55-hwy, 29mpg on interstate @ 80mph, and I get 26mpg in the city... plus the car looks great!

Bought mine in 2011 (the car is an 06') with 60k miles, loaded (nav/heated and cooled seats/back cam/etc) and paid 16k

im selling my lexus gs awd year 2007 on ebay. it is awful with 17mpg city. what hurts more is that it only uses premium gas.
the gf camry is gets much better mileage and uses regular gas. so any car greater than 17mpg and uses regular, in my book, is a great car to get. i will check out your suggestions on CL for any local deals. thanks!

Since your gf has a Camry, I would suggest getting something other than another Camry. Other people gave good recommendations.

Camry/Fusion/Altima/Accord/Sonata for 4 cylinder midsize

Corolla/Focus/Civic/Mazda 3 for economy

There are tons more to choose from, but this is what I prefer and recommend.

'06 Avalon or so. Should be what, $15k now? Huge beastly car; nearly 300 HP, 20-30 MPG, loaded with amenities you'll probably never use, interior space the size of a minivan, and you can fit like 15 bodies in the trunk.

Buying used is a good opportunity to jump to a higher model/trim for a steal.
