hi, i know someone that has a single workstation that needs to be backed up daily. it doesnt need to have enterprise grade disaster recovery, just something simple that copies the data shares someplace else every night. i have seen some external HDs advertised with 'backup' software... will that do the job? also, can anyone recomend an ext HD and its software to do this? thanks

yeah, tape is great because it can be easily transported off site, but i dont think it's in this person's budget.

I have an onstream ADR tape drive, works great. Think they have IDE models even (mines SCSI)

well, you can probably get a seagate drive(actually samsung even, they tend to run quieter and lower heat for less $, but slower. anyway, gwet a internal drive, put it in a cheap external enclosure and then add some open source ro cheap backup software. affordable, customizable and when done, hotswap another drive in (if you buy SATA)

Similar circumstance here. I use an external USB drive with xxcopy to back up folders with critical information. You can use the Windows scheduler to run xxcopy automatically every day (or even every few hours). You can get xxcopy here: http://www.xxcopy.com/.

If xxcopy is a little too intimidating, you can do the same thing with Karen's Replicator, but I find it doesn't do as good a job copying "in use" files as xxcopy: http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp

Replicator has scheduling built-in.

I would suggest a Maxtor Onetouch II. I have one and absolutely love it. And get XXCopy. Perfect combo. :D

What about those external drives I always see, with the "one touch" back-up button and whatnot? Are those good, overpriced, or just crap?
Example

You should read the posts above yours ;)

I have the Onetouch II 100GB and absolutely love it. I've installed XXCopy and every night it does a full backup to the external drive. :)

Any external drive coupled with Norton Ghost would work as well, if you want a fairly foolproof image based backup.
