reliable server hosting? virtual desktops?

Hoping to get some experiences from others on server hosting. I'm working on a possible virtual desktop type setup, where we'd have a Remote Desktop server hosted somewhere along with a separate file server.

Users would RDP into the Remote Desktop server, run their applications (Office, Quickbooks, etc.), access their email (likely hosted with Office 365), with no need to install or maintain applications on their desktops. They'd get a consistent experience whether working from home, from the office, etc.. Probably 10-15 users.

We do the same now but with on-premises servers, but looking to host servers elsewhere for this particular project.

So, anyone have any experiences with server hosting companies? We're not looking for the latest fly-by-night deal, but a consistently reliable company that will be here for a while. We're currently looking at Rackspace.com and Singlehop.com.

We're debating between dedicated servers, cloud-based servers, perhaps dynamic servers. I like the idea of having the server hosted on a VM so we can rearrange resources as needed, but I want to be sure performance is not lacking.

I also like the idea of being able to download a copy of our VM should we decide to move the hosting elsewhere - does anyone allow that?

Above and beyond hosting, does anyone have any experience running virtual desktops like I described with one of these companies? I see that some companies specialize on this, make adding/removing users a snap with a custom control panel, etc... I'm not necessarily interested in that, would prefer to cut out the middle man and keep things as simple as possible.

Any opinions and experiences welcome.

Thanks!

You may want to look at amazon web services. They provide virtual web servers, I don't like how they calculate there billing as its a bit convoluted (done by the hour/minute/bandwidth).

That said its incredibly easy to setup servers, but pay attention to their pricing strategies.
