I'm thinking of getting CD ROM Drive for under $30. I'm considering CyberDrive, Generic, Pine and Samsung, any suggestions which one is the most reliable?

thx

I've had Sony, NEC, ACER and tons of generic no name brands. The brand names all crapped out just as early if not sooner than generic no names. That being said, I now buy only generic.

Asus is most well known for its motherboards, but what many people don't know is that their optical drives are excellent. Ask anyone who's owned one, and they'll probably tell you that they'll never use anything else. I've had mine for over a year and it's still going strong. It's fast and will read anything. You can find the 52x CD-ROM here for $26.

Yeah i agree. Asus makes amazing CD-ROM drives. I think there was a price drop on their 52x recently too.

I'm using the 52x. It's nice and quiet and fast too.

For $30, you might as well spend $10 more to get a Toshiba SD-M1612 DVD-ROM, it offers probably the most well-rounded CD-ROM and DVD-ROM performance, and it's perfect for any CloneCD purposes.

Im fond of my plextor 40x for its precise audio extraction and realtime up to speed data transfer, but it also costs an arm and a leg....

so for a cheap CD ROM, I would strongly recommend TEAC... their drives have always been bulletproof for me and you can pick up a new 32x or higher TEAC IDE for like 20-25 bucks.... I have also dealt with Asus, Pioneer/Hi-Val and Samsung and find their drives to be just as good... I havent had great experiences with Sony, Acer, Creative, nor most generic drives.... I mainly stick with the above listed anymore.

I also second that you might as well get a DVD-ROM for the prices out today.... I think that the only of the 4 that I recommend that doesnt make a DVD drive is Teac...

*EDIT* Oh yeah, I quite like Kenwood drives too, great speed... However Ive seen them go out on friends systems, and I dont know that they are necessarily cheap
