Reliable Bandwidth Tester

I got cable installed yesterday.

On download.com games section. I am testing my bandwidth and it gets slower with each successive try. Why is this? It starts at dial up speeds then goes down. Then sometimes when I test it I get 290kbps. I have 600kbps cable.

But when I go to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ to test it I get 500-550kbps.

So I'm wondering what *reliable* tester are you guys using?

I usually use dslreports.com but I seen one site that has millions of speed tests from everywhere. Probably found it on google under speed tests

Thanks

Not so bothered now about it.

It is fast now. Before browsing was VER slow, even slower then my dial up speed. But now its very fast so thats good😀

bah, CNET gives my connection 1.07 mbps, BroadBandReports.com says 1.7 mbps, and BandwidthPlace.com says 2.4 mbps...should I just average them? 😀

I get CNet 1.7, Bandwithplace 1.9. But I've been anywhere from 300KB to 2.5. Just depends on so many factors at a given time.

I've always used a local Speakeasy test page, for example Chicago would be chi.speakeasy.net, LA would be lax.speakeasy.net, etc etc.

I've NEVER found a reliable bandwidth test site. That Speed test shows me getting 2.4 Megabits per second (Twice a T1 speed). The funny thing is Comcast has our downloads capped at 180kbps here in TN and we can't go over that limit while downloading. So I don't have a freaking 2.4MB download. In otherwords this test is BS and pointless, it's not a real world test.

bandwidthplace always gives me the highest scores when im at school, but i have to agree with likelinus that ive never found a really reliable test site. dslreports give consistent results, but it will usually show 1.8-2mbit. but any time i get more than one download going at once i can easily get 400kB/s or more combined (which translates to 3.2mbit). interestingly, this is really close to what bandwidthplace says my speed is.

id say your best bet is to get some kind of bandwidth monitor (or use windows' built in stuff depending on what OS you are using), then get several downloads going from known fast sites and see how high you can get your total throughput.

That really is the best indicator of speed. Downloading from serveral sources and see where you top out at. Otherwise these "bandwidth test" are so unrealistic.

Don't forget to use DSLReports tweak tools.

Oh, and welcome to the world of Broadband! I'm never going back to dialup if I can help it.

A T1 is 1.5 Megabits per second. (Roughly 190KB/sec)
Your 180KB/sec is close to that of a T1 but all speedtest sites very.

DSL Reports is quite reliable, for me, at least

Bandwidthplace.com showed my ex's father's cable modem connection at 5mbps. DSL Reports shows a consistent 3092kbps. Bandwidthplace was down for a while (went there a couple of weeks ago and the site said the tests were down). They're back now but apparently quite inaccurate.

And, if you're having problems with speed...be sure to use the Tweak Tests under Our Tools at DSL Reports. After I installed ICS on a multi-homed XP box, my DSL speeds went from 150KB/s to about 30KB/s. Ran the Tweak Test and then used DRTCP to reset some things and was back up to my screaming (

) 150KB/s.

bandwith place... 4.8 megabits per second
seems to be right... i get like 600k

optimum online owns 🙂 heh

NTL (I think your with NTL, there the only provider who actually have a 600kbps cable?) Use a transparent proxy for web pages hence a delay sometimes when entering sites, especially those of dynamic contents.

Also have a look into Force9's/Plusnet speed test as its connecting via LINX so shouldnt be bandwidth restricted. Has been very reliable for me.

This doesn't have anything to do with testing your bandwidth, but have you optimized the internet related settings on your PC? Check out Speedguide.net's TCP/IP analyzer and TCP/IP optimizer.

NTL DOCSIS CMTS based platform, MTU will be optimised on default, Recieve window could effect performance.
