Hi all,

I've an AOpen mobo with built in CPU temp sensor. I'm really itching to oc my CPU (P3 550 Katmai) which always stays at 34C (running RC5... My room is always at 30-32C, unless if it's raining or the air con is on). Can I trust the monitoring utility? The software comes from AOpen themselves...

I think that's a normal operating temperature for PIII...
In my opinion, you can't really trust the built-in sensors. At least the sensor in my KT7a tells me my Duron is running sometimes over 80 degrees celcius, while the real temperature is somewhere between 30 and 40.
BTW, quite an unfriendly overclocking environment there...

Which Aopen MB do you have?

If its reading hte p3-internal diode, it is accurate enough, and temp changes are completely shown. IE, let's say its uncalibrated, and teh readings on a whole are 3C too high over actual temp. But then you switch heatsinks and get a 5C drop. Well, that 5C drop is exactly the temp drop you'll get.

Now, with newer socket-a stuff, it is extremely unreliable.

i hate to change the mobo in question, but since this thread exists...

I have Asus CUSL2 motherboard w/ a PIII 733MHz flip chip, the CPU temp according to bios is 52C, but Asus probe in win2k reads it at a steady 38C at idle processing. Can I conclude that Asus probe is unreliable in terms of temperature reading? If it is, are there other reliable utilities out there for download?

Mike has done some excellent research on this entire topic !!. Always assume the worst. EXTRA CASE FANS< ADEQUATE ROOM VENT> good POWER SUPPLY..... all essentials to Ocing. Sometimes you get the freebie OC but considering that all the extra cost GOODIES cost $$$$s keep a tight hold of you CC.

MikeWarrior2: I've got the AX6BC EZ. How do you know whether it's monitoring temp changes via the P3 internal diode? BTW, would the MBM be better than the proggies from the mobo vendors?

Seems like I read that they were not all that accurate ...but close enough. There is a probe that can be attached for the best control ....just read that...do not know know more.

MikeWarrior2: Hmm.. Havne't really tried that, but when I do switch on my PC when the air is cold, the temp registers at 20-22C ;) So I guess that's an indication that the temp sensor is working ;)
