I'm looking at a used PC with a 5970 for $900, and after doing a little browsing on the net and seeing what 5970s are going for used it almost seems like too good of a deal.

Fot those with 5970s: How are they holding up for you?

i got one on launch day when they came out, then gave it to my buddy when i got my 6970 xfire. still running great in his PC. it's never been OC'd though. they're solid cards.

what's the rest of this PC look like? you can build yourself a nice *fresh* PC for $900.

I'd have to call up the guy for the exact details, but I do remember it has a newer i7 cpu in it, lots of ram, 2 TB storage (I think).

That seems almost too good to be true, is it 5970 or 6970? One is dual GPU the other isnt :p

From what I hear this guy does tend to play with his toys and then get bored and toss them aside; I don't know him extremely well, just through a friend.

It is a 5970, but if it stops working or cooks it's not worth a dime, and I'm out $900.

If it's Gigabyte, Asus, or MSI, you can RMA it only by having the serial, don't need the original invoice for those companies. If it's Sapphire, Powercolor, or HIS and it dies, you're screwed :p I avoid those companies like a plague.

I've always believed that you get what you pay for, so I'm a little concerned, but I think I'm going to look at it again and role the dice if it checks out.

I'll update this thread if/when I get it.

It'll either be "Should have known better" or "What a steal".

If you're really concerned ask him to let you run a stress test on it for a little while (if you're getting it in person)

I don't find the deal that unbelievable. It's hard as shit to sell complete systems secondhand especially locally

Over a year ago I bought a complete system minus hard drive here: i5 750/4gb ddr3/5770 + case, psu, mobo for only $450 shipped

If I get this thing my first stress test will be Metro 2033 maxed out.

And Crysis. It's been sitting in my Steam account until I got a PC that could do it some justice (I'm still using XP).

In my experience, people who don't regularly sell computer stuff online are often willing to sell it for much less than the usual going rate.

oh wow. complete i7 machine on top of those? i know i'm late posting back, but you'd be a full not to take that. this guy sounds like me. i give my "old" components away, or really cheap to friends or on CL when i upgrade every new cpu/gpu iteration :)

Yeah - my patience failed me. I called him and said I wanted it (I didn't want him to think too much about it, or mention it to someone else).

I get it early next week.

*thumbs crossed*

I still say once you get the system sell the 5970. It doesn't do too great in Metro 2033 for example or in F1 2010, etc. You should sell it now while it still has a ton of value (due to bitcoin mining prob.). If you still need that much horsepower, you can always grab an HD6990/GTX590 (if you prefer a single card) or just wait for 28nm GPUs.

I've never actually sold anything on ebay, but if I'm not satisfied with the card I might make it my first sale.

Another question: Can a 5970 handle eyefinity?

I have a nice 1680x1050 monitor and I saw on newegg that I could pick up two more pretty cheap. Or is the res too high with three?

5970's are well build cards but I'd sell it while it still has value and get a 6990 or 6970.

read the Anandtech article about it. the card has lots of OC headroom (article basically says its a waste if you dont OC) and better throttling protection, for instance if you run Furmark it'll undervolt. read the article, its a good one anyway.

Well, I picked it up today.

The guy did an impressive job of cleaning it up for me. Everything looks in good order. The CPU is an i7 930 or something like that.

I ran 3dmark06 because I had it on an external drive. I got about 19600, but the online grid says that's slow for a 5970.

I guess I'll have to overclock it.

Thanks for all advice.
