Reliability issues of new Hitachi Deskstar 200gb hard drive?

I need a new hard drive urgently, and I found a deal on the Hitachi Deskstar 200gb hard drive. Now I know these used to be called Deathstars because of lots of reliability issues, but that was before Hitachi bought the line from IBM. Is that issue no longer there and can I be confident with this purchase? Also how is it on noice and temp?

I would say that you are safe with the purchase. There have been no reports of abnormally high failure rates with recent model Hitachi drives. I owned two of the deathstars (they both did die), there were reports all over the net several months after these drives were released citing high failure rates. And luckily I made sure to back up all data and never had any data loss.

Also, I own a 120GB Hitachi IDE unit and it has performed admirably for the past year. I guess I still like IBM/Hitachi drives even though they failed on me in the past.

IBM / Hitachi drives have been as reliable as everyone else's for sveral generations now. The'ye also very quiet except for a couple of times a day when they do an extra seek to prevent head sticking -- some have described this seek as a "cricket chirp" and it's very noticeable the first time you hear it.

Hitachi has a new firmware that gets rid of the chirping. You have to email them about it with your drive's serial number and they'll email you the new firmware. Some people have said that their drives are now shipping with this firmware.

And the chirping was about every 20 minutes, not just a few times a day 🙂.

<=== has a 160GB Hitachi.
