With the upcoming release of the new G80 chips, how much will the current 7900 series and X1950 series drop?

I'm looking for an uprgrade that will last about two years until I buy/build a new rig and am wondering if I should pull the trigger on the new X1950 Pro cards at $200 or wait a couple of weeks until the G80 cards come out hoping the 7950 series will drop to the $200 level.

I won't need a DX10 compatible card for a couple of years. Current system is P4 3.4 with 1GB Ram.

Any suggestions?

One of my friends who works for PC e-shop told me not to expect much lower prices until january( because 8800 won´t be widely available for about 6 weeks after launch).
EDIT: I live in EU.

Seems like they often don't drop past a certain level, try finding a cheap 7800GT or X1800XT right now.

I have a hard time believing they will keep the average price of a 7950GTX at $550 like it is now. I am doing a complete upgrade in December and I would think they would have to drop to at least sub 500 levels.

Tell your friend that using the Inquirer and stating the information as his own probably isn't the most intelligent thing to do (since, oddly enough, that's exactly what they said).

With christmas shopping season here, demand should be pretty high and keep prices high. The current high end stuff like the 7900gtx and 1950xtx will probably drop but the mid range and low range probably will only drop a little until after christmas. Just imho.

Both ATI and Nvidia seem to have done pretty well lately at cutting supply off very tight, leaving only a small or non-existent window of "cheap last years stuff" behind. Once the supply dwindles to a certain point, the price skyrockets on the remaining stuff. The x8xx series cards this didn't seem to work well with, ATI was still trying to give those away last time I checked.

I can't say I blame them for taking this approach. You want to sell your new stuff at your new stuff prices. Why compete with your competitors products as well your own last generation products?
