Release dates

I swear stores had previously received their shipments of new games on Monday so they were out on the shelves on Tuesday when the game was officially released. I have been calling around about Assassin's Creed and Crysis and most stores are telling me Wednesday and a couple have even told me Friday.

Is this a new thing or have I just been lucky when purchasing other new releases?

This annoys me to no end to. You can look at almost any release list and almost every game will be listed as releasing on Tuesday. Yet for some games it's the ship date (as in shipped on that day) and for some games it's the street date (on the shelves). In general it seems like only the biggest games (e.g. Halo) can be counted on being in stores on the release dates. I don't know why it can't be like DVDs where all the movies releasing that day are actually on the shelves that day. The current system is stupid.

Most game stores (EB Games/Gamestop) will put their games out on Tuesday unless something else happens. Big box stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc put their games out on Thursday but I've seen delays there as well. The Best Buys near me didn't have Forza 2 until the week after it was released for example.

Tuesday is the shipdate for games, not the release date. (typically)

Some stores get them in same day, the majority of them get em in Wednesday.

I think people get confused now a days cause of the internet, they will see on ebgames.com that the "ship date" on the pages for preorders are typically tuesdays, so they think that means they will be in stores that day as well. But that's not the case.

I usually check ign for my dates and they specifically list the date as the "Release Date."

Most new games nowadays will come IN on wednesday. It appears tuesdays are too crammed with new movie releases that retailers are having a hard time doing new movies and new game releases on the same day. I've noticed that new games I want that have a tuesday release date, and I go to my local BB or EB/GS they all say the shipment will be in late in the afternoon, hence, wednesday. Kinda sucks because i rarely have time to take a lunch break on tuesdays let alone on wednesdays. Thats why I stopped buying comic books 10 years ago. The weekly releases were killing me finacially and if you didnt get there on new issue day you didnt get the comic. Crazyness. 🙂

Just last week, Scene-It came out on Tuesday but stores didn't get it until Thursday. I ordered it from Amazon on Thursday after trying in vain to get it from Target 3 days in a row, and with 2 day shipping I'll get it today.

I don't buy games on release day often, but with a few games in the past that I've preordered at EB Games, I didn't get the game until the day after the official release date. Same with Mario Galaxy - release date is today, I pre-ordered at TRU, they told me it would be in tomorrow.

It's one day. Either ship it earlier or move the release date to avoid the confusion.

Mario and Sonic At the Olympics came in stock at the target near me over the weekend sometime. Worked out for me because I would have bought it if it was in stock last Tuesday but after reading up on it I decided to just skip it instead.

But go look at the release dates on IGN.com. The release dates are always listed as Tuesdays and are never noted as being "ship dates". And even for games that a place like EB Games has the dates listed as "ship dates", if a B&M store gets them in on or before that day then they will be on the shelves that day. So if they are allowed to put them on the shelves that day then it is the release date. That's why it's all so confusing. There is no consistency at all.

Then add in the fact that most games use Tuesdays as their release/ship date. That's the same day that other media, like DVDs, typically gets released... and the other media is almost always on the shelves that day. If publishers are going to try and use the same date as other media then they should try to put it on the shelf that day too.

I was just looking at my Circuit City flyer from last week, and it actually says "Tuesday by 2pm" or "Wednesday by 3pm" to indicate when the game will be in stock. Kmart's flyer says Tuesday by 5pm for Mario. That's a smart way to do it, although it'd be nice if they just shipped them so they'd be in stock on "release" day. 🙂
