Relay access denied

So I just sent an e-mail through my ISP to a Hotmail adress and I got my message rejected with "Relay access denied"

I've had trouble with AOL claiming anything through my ISP's smtp (smtp.vom.com) is spam, but, if this issue is spreading to other websites I might need to think about some way to send e-mail outside of my ISP's world. I'm rather pissed.

Try gmail, yahoo, etc. At my former job, we had many problems with hotmail either rejecting or making our emails vanish into thin air.

You first need to find out if the relay denial came from your ISP's SMTP server or from some other hop on the way, most likely it came from your ISP's server which would be a misconfiguration on their part and nothing that Hotmail can do anything about.

ok so this is what I got back:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'some one' on 12/10/2007 8:03 AM
554 5.7.1 <someone@hotmail.com>: Relay access denied

So what does that mean? How do I figure out where it went wrong.
