Just for the hell of it, I just checked my credit report. On Transunion I show an account with a Brighthouse cable tv provider in FL (for $736). On Expierian I show another cable tv account with a different company (for $356). My sister opened both as she must know my social security number. Both are delinquent. Now I have never lived in FL, so no way I could possible want to watch any cable tv down there!!

Do I have any options. Will the credit bureaus rake me over the coals and say TS? One of the options to open a dispute with TransUnion is to check off "Unknown address or relative opened account without my consent." If I report its mys sister, will she get arrested? I just want this shiz off my credit report. I'm trying to buy a car fer'chrisakes!

Anyone else ever have this happen to them? How did it play out?

What state do you live in?

I know people in WV who don't think twice before screwing-over their own family members. Sounds awfully familiar.

I would call your sister first and she if she will help you clear things up with the credit bureaus. Then I would change my SS number.

Not so sure about that.... I think she will just beg/plead with me and get my mother involved. The stress will be high. I'd like to just report it calmly, mater of factually to all 3 bureaus and let the chips fall where they may.

I live in MA by the way. Uhhh, yeah I'm not going to declare bankruptcy over a grand. I make too much for it to even be an option (and a stupid one at that).

Contact the companies and tell them that you've apparently been the victim of identity theft. You've never lived in Florida and have never had their service.
Also, contact the credit companies and tell them the same thing.

As long as you can prove that you've lived elsewhere, you SHOULD be able to clear these.

My daughter's ex was a similar scumbag. Because he had crappy credit with the local phone company, gas company, and electric companies, he had all the services put in the names of his kids. (my grandkids) The three kids are going to grow up with fucked credit...because their dad ran up bills in their names...and never paid the bills.

Wait, you can put that shit in your children's names?

When I worked at a law firm, I remember going after this guy for driving around uninsured and getting into car accidents. Apparently we were going after the actual deadbeat's son. The dad knew all the info and had the same name as his kid, so he'd just give them that info whenever he got into trouble (DL names would match).

But wondering If I just report this right away to the credit bureaus, would my sister get arrested down in FL?

With a bit of luck...maybe, but they'd have to prove that it was her.

What do you want more...your credit cleared or family harmony?

Do you KNOW it was her, 100%, unequivocal, no questions asked? If there is even the slightest possibility it was someone, anyone else just report it as unknown identity theft. You can get it off your report by proving you have no connection to the service addresses and you don't implicate her in the process.

I don't get it.

Report it and if she did it and she gets caught and goes to jail so what. Allowing her to get away with it is the same as giving her your approval. Making you the enabler. This only encourages the same behavior in the future. Nip it in the bud.

At this point I don't see why you would need to implicate her. Just call up the companies and credit companies like BoomerD stated. You don't have to say it was your sister right off since it sounds like you can provide reasonable proof that you were never a resident of that state.

My wife had her identity stolen years ago. She's gotten calls from a hospital for the birth of someone else's child, among other less ridiculous things. It took a long time and a lot of work to get a lot of bullshit cleaned out of her credit report.

A couple years ago, we got a call from a phone company for service in a town we've never lived. We explained the issue, told them how we've never lived there and obviously wouldn't be paying any such bills. I don't remember what specific info was asked, but we were able to verify our story was true.

Thankfully we haven't had any such calls since. I now re-activate fraud alerts for our profiles with the credit bureaus every 90 days.

I hope whoever stole her identity (I know they lived in Salida, CO...let that guide your assumptions) was eaten by coyotes.

Anyway, OP, you might give a call to the companies yourself and explain that you found all this info when you checked your credit report, and that you don't even live in Florida. I imagine they have SOP to deal with this kind of stuff. Personally, I wouldn't volunteer up your sister, but if she's caught in some kind of investigation....well so be it.

Report it. It might not be your sister, in which case hopefully the guilty party gets arrested and goes to jail. If it is your sister, she will learn a lesson that its NOT okay to steal someone's identity.

Or otherwise accept that she will have ruined your credit history for her own gain.

FLA police, get the sister arrested for fraud.

Perhaps a stint in the slammer will get her to stop doing drugs and stealing identities.

The address of where these accounts were opened with are the last two places my sister lived. So there ya go...

People have figured out that stealing a relative's information to run up bills is a pretty safe thing to do. Let the relative suffer the credit hit and do all the work to get things cleaned up and there won't be any consequences because they don't want to press charges.
