Relation between CPU speed/CD burning speed.

Ok, I have 2 systems.
1) AMD 2100+ @ 2.2GHZ, I have a 12x burner in it, when I am writing CD, the speed will be between 10x-12x and CPU usage is very min.
2) Cel 1ghz w/ 384mb ram that handle all my data and FTP, I just bought a Toshiba 4x DVD-rw(16x CD) and a LG DVD drive for it.
Both use easy CD 6 on Win2k

Do some testing on my new toy last nite, but the result is bad.
Backup DVD movie using Xcopy, it take a dam 1.5hr to read the DVD(compare to <45min in my AMD) and cpu usage is 100% all the way. And something happen to write.
Copying some CD and the write speed is average 8x(when image is already in HD) and 3x-4x if disk to disk. CPU usage is always 100%.

Is it slow because of my cappy Cel 1ghz? If I put a PIII 1ghz in it will it result better?

Yes (unless you have the 256K cache version) as the CPU Cache has a lot to do with it

Check to make sure that DMA is turned on for your DVD/CDRW drive in Device Manager. With this turned off, your CPU usage will spike to 100% when reading/writing to any IDE devices.

[Edit] Sheriff: If the problem is DMA not turned on, a faster processor will make no difference whatsoever.

Uhh ... my P3 450 burned CDs in 4.5 mins... with a 24X burner.

As Dopefiend pointed out... Check for DMA. Might even want to try switching the IDE cable...

That's right. All CPUs wait at the same speed 🙂
I suspect that this is a DMA issue but it could also be the drive. I mean, 16x cd write? YIKES!
It doesn't sound like a very capable DVD burner. Still, it shouldn't be that bad. I would definitely look into DMA. (primary IDE controller in devman in XP)
