Reinstallation problems

I have an old aluminum powerbook that i was going to sell to laptopheaven.com. They claim they wipe the hd's, but i prefer to do that myself so i know it is actually done.

I used Dariks Boot and Nuke 2.0 (www.dban.org). I was going to install the os so that laptopheaven would see that the computer boots fine. I had thought that inserting the OSX disk and holding "c" during start up would allow me to install OSX again. No go. The screen alternates flashing the old OS9 finder image and a question mark on a folder. It does not want to recognize the cdrom

I then intialized the disc by connecting it as a firewire disk to my macbook. It recognized and formatted the powerbooks laptop. It also recognized the old os9/10.1/10.2 discs that i had in the drive at various times.

Still no success in installing OSX. Any ideas? Is it possible to install the OS while it is in the firewire target mode?

I'd try that.
Alternatively, as you (OP) suggested, you could hook up another Mac, place the laptop in FireWire target disk mode, run the installer on the other Mac, and just select the laptop as the install directory. I've done this before with great success.

Are the OS discs you have the ones that came with the machine originally or are they retail copies? If 10.2 came out before that model PowerBook was originally released, the retails discs probably would not be able to boot the machine.

I believe 10.2 came out before this model. The discs are retail.

I think i am going to try the firewire target disk mode since i know it will recognize it in that mode.

Thanks. I will post updates later.
