Hi,

How do you reinstall windows 2000?

My add/remove tool does not work and I am thinking that it should be fairly easy to wipe my hard drive and reinstall windows and the few programs that I use.

Is this true? Does anyone know of an on line tutorial to do this.

Thanks,

Mark

PS I also seem to have maxed out my hard drive w/in 2 or 3 %.

Insert CD into drive, restart PC, boot to CD drive and follow instructions. If you have any special hardware that needs drivers, hit F6 when setup starts.

Ok thanks, I guess that was a stupid question.

So I gather, I do not have to "wipe" the hard drive.

Well, if you want to completley start fresh with absolutley nothing on the drive except Windows 2000, you can choose to format the partition before installing Windows. If you feel confident that your drive has no surface errors and you want to skip a potentially lengthy format process, feel free to do a quickformat. But you don't have to "wipe" the drive, so to speak.

Ok, thanks.

It often checks for errors on the disk and it has not found any; so, I'll just try the easy method first and reinstall windows on top of everything.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Here are some additional tips:

1) If possible, have these files saved onto a CD to install on Win2000 right after completing installation:

2) make sure the computer is protected by a firewall BEFORE it is plugged into a network. That could be a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm's free version, or a router. Why? to prevent the computer from being auto-infected by network worms.

3) For good ongoing security against exploits and malware in "user land," you can separate your Administrator powers from your daily-driver powers. Create a new user account in the Control Panel > Users and Passwords, get it all set up and configured, then come back and change it to a Restricted User account. Save your Administrator account for when you actually need Admin-level powers.

If your Administrator account has a password, then you can log onto your Restricted User account, right-click stuff while holding the Shift key, and Run As it as the Admin account where necessary, too.
