My motherboard died and I replaced the motherboard and CPU unit.

Can I use the same hard drives (with XP Pro) with my new unit or do I have to reformat the hard drives?

Yes you can!

The only things you may have to do is install the newer drivers that come with your motherboard. Also, if it asks you to validate your Windows copy again, just enter in your key and you're good to go.

If it doesn't take it will prompt you to call it in, when you do just tell them you replaced some hardware, "no I only have this installed on 1 computre" blah blah blah, and you're set.

Good luck!

Here's the thing.

My current copy of XP was validated with the CD key in the beginning of the install years ago, but a year ago I got the Genuine advantage notification and I didn't pass the verification.

Can I still use the XP on my hard drive or do I have to reformat my hard drive?
