Reinstall Os for fun?

I hate reinstalling, because I have so many apps that I use. I've learn to setup my network as centralized as possible, so at least I dont need to do stuff like restore email, files, etc as lot of my stuff is on my linux server which is mirrored (to a certain extent) to my backup server. But stil, reconfiguring my profile settings, restoring thunderbird, firefox, etc profiles, reconfiguring my FTP client sites.... all that stuff is tedious. I take it one thing at a time as I need them though.

But as I start running into small issues, slugishness, lot of junk installed/uninstalled (those always leave crap behind) I tend to start thinking of doing a fresh install, though I usually try to avoid em. With win2k I've lasted about a year between reinstalls. I recently upgraded to XP so I cant tell how long I'll last with XP but its not as fragile as I expected it to be. I probably just got that thought from seeing so many trashed XP machines, but I have to consider the level of the owners as well... spyware downloaders, virus openers, those type of people. Any system can be trashed easily by people like that.

Reinstalling a server is probably worse then a workstation though. When I migrated to FC5 from debian, its just such a long and painful task to reconfigure everything. Though this is where I really like linux, since importing stuff like user databases is literally a file copy operation.

I had kidney stone surgery up my uretha last Feb. I was peeing blood and almost unable to walk for 4 days. That was still more fun than reinstalling all my software and that surgery was the most painful thing I've ever endured.

Wow!
Reinstalling must be like shitting bricks with nails poking out for you. :Q

The only scenerio of installing an OS that would be "fun" would be:

Strap Link19 to a chair; install Windows 98 hundreds of times in a row as he watches in horror at all the "fun"

Have loads of free time? BORED? Get Linux.

In all seroiusness that is a good idea😉 If you are resintalling over and over clearly you want something better to do. Learning linux a much better choice in spending your time

I hate reinstalling windows... I also hate companys that put in requirements to be launched by setup.exe and all of creative's installers. It is fun to be able to make a CD/DVD that installs all the applications you need(well almost all, some are not worth the trouble), sets up users, and even customizes the UI a bit.

I am sad... apparently (yeah yeah I know it aint news to some of ya 😉 )

I love experimenting with different builds, be they Linux or Windows. I get automated install CD's nailed so when people bring a PC in for reinstall... I slip in a DVD and press one button for them to have a pristine install (that I can charge them for a couple of hours work for even though it took me 30 seconds 😉 )

I have a minimum of 3-4 OS's on my main box at any one time and will change at least one of them each week just for the hell of it and keep my knowledge of them up to date...

... and yeah most the time I enjoy it unless its getting some obscure hardware to work on Linux 😀

ROFL. And put hotsauce on his nuts!!!

No. I image/clone my OS HD the 1st time I install the OS. When sh!t happens, I just wipe and put the image back, or just plug the clone drive in.

i would never reinstall my OS unless it was running much slower than it should, or if there was something buggy with it that couldnt be fixed (due to something dumb i did most likely) Or if I do a major upgrade.

Because of this, I probably end up reinstalling my OSes once every 1-2 years. I usually dont have a reason to reinstall it any sooner than that.

Well, I don't like reinstalling in general; however I will do so if something is really starting to get screwy. I don't mind as much when the installs go smoothly; but it's when the problems arise that I get the feeling to commit homicide.

My old M2N-E would ALWAYS throw up errors on a Windows install. I spent 12 hours installing Windows one time; and it's something I never want to do again. Nothing worse that being at 95%, and seeing that error pop up on screen.
