Reinstall of Fallout3...saved games

When I originally purchased Fallout3, I installed and played it on my previous WINXP rig.

I recently built a new WIN7 based gaming rig, and decided to reinstall Fallout3. I've read on other forums mention of people having problems even launching the game in WIN7. I was able to get into the game no problem, and even get through the character building sequence.

I exited the game, moved my old Save Game files over to the new Save game folder and went back into the game. The title screen is not giving me the option to load a previous game.

I've done a few searches in various forums around Fallout3 saved games, and haven't encountered any scenarios of people encountering this problem. I did find one similar thread around a Windows Live ID, but I believe that problem was specific to Xbox.

I may be talking out of my arse, but I seem to think maybe you need to play all the way through the character creation tutorial before that unlocks load game on the menu. . .after all, until you've done that you've obviously got nothing to load in. <facepalm>

I'd move your saves back to somewhere safe, then:

Start new game
Save game ASAP
Exit to main menu
Ensure newly-saved game can be loaded
Exit FO3
_Copy_ saves into appropriate folder
Start FO3
Load desired savegame

What I suspected. I wanted to avoid going through the whole character creation process. Granted I can quick select the character properties in doing so, but its a time sink to go through the whole process again.

This is why I miss DOS. They put EVERYTHING in one freakin directory and you always knew where to find stuff.
I hated Titan Quest cuz it completely loses your caravan stash whenever you reinstall your game. Had to use the unofficial Vault program to keep my stuff.

Only thing I can think of is that if you signed into Games for Windows when you made those save games then you still need to sign into it to see the saves. I never understood why they would make two sets of saves. One set if I was signed in and another set if I wasn't but you couldn't see both sets at the same time.

Ok, so I logged into the fresh install via my Windows Live account, which created a Windows Live saved game folder under Fallout3. I dumped my Save Games into this folder, and can now load my previous saves.

But it does mean I have to log into Windows Live first. I am not a big fan of Windows Live. I prefer to launch all my games from Steam, regardless of whether or not I purchased them on Steam.

Oh well.

There's a mod to remove GFWL:

You should get a bunch of mods. I wouldn't suggest doing for any huge gameplay changes for your first playthrough, but you can at least make the game look a lot better. I'd recommend at least the following:

- Fallout Mod Manager (an absolute must for modding)
- DarNified UI (makes fonts MUCH smaller so you can fit more on the screen)
- Fallout Script Extender (required for DarNified UI)
- Fellout (removes green tint, makes nights a lot darker)

Stuff that adds new weapons, abilities, armor, etc. isn't as necessary for your first run through.

The game only needs 1 mod - unlimited carry weight. The default game is nearly unplayable because the character gets bogged down just by picking up 20 caps worth of random junk. 90% of the game is spent in town selling stuff when the limits are so low.

I purchased my FO3 on steam and yes I still needed gayforwindows. It should automatically log in when the game starts though, so it's not really a problem unless your internet is unreliable.

Sack of Holding is my personal favorite (was Bag of holding in oblivion), but FOMM is a must for modding (the ability to install and uninstall mods is a life-saver). Also there's a few mods that make that stupid mastermind hacking mini-game a lot easier too.

Also you'll definetely want to get Fellout eventually when you get sick of yellowish-green everything.
