MS-6340M Motherboard with Athlon 1.2 Win 98SE
I cannot get on the internet with this machine, I think because of the corrupt or missing msoe file. When I dial up I get connected but cannot even ping my provider. Thinking that it was IE explorer I reloaded win98 se. It did not help. Tried 2 modems that I know work (One out of this machine I am using) Once I get connected the connection just dies. If I try and open outlook express i get the error MSOE.DLL is faulty. I copied this file from this machine and need to know how to apply it to the other machine. I tried even drastic measures, I loaded Netacape communicator on the machine and recieved the same result.
Whatever caused this problem killed my access to the machine through my LAN also. I also did a complete virus scan that was updated last friday. The modems are winmodems. Also found that NOEMS was running so I disabled that in the Config.sys also cleaned out the autoexec.bat so nothing in there. I have no idea how NOEMS got in the config file. Really stumped on this one. I would format but I have 9 seti work units stuck in the machine and do not want to loose them.
Thanks

You shouldn't have anything in config.sys ot autoexec unless you need to run REALLY old H/W.

Remove any firewall software, sometimes they can prevent 'net and LAN access if they stuff up (or if setup that way)

MSOE shouldn't affect access to the network, it's only a support dll for Outlook Express.

I will take my firewall off the machine. NOEMS is no expanded memory system. I have no idea how anything got in the config sys file. I am thinking maybe that my register has become corrupted, i am going to try a register restore also. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks for replying

Update------I removed the firewall from the machine and can access the internet again. I am now getting a boot error. Probably something in the startup that is left over from the Zone Alarm uninstall.
Your suggestion was right on the money and I thank you very much.

Redownload ZoneAlarm, every time a new OS comes out or a serivce pack come out ZoneAlarm will break (well many times anyway)

i see this problem all the time. you can even reinstall your OS and you will still get that error. what you have there is a combination of a registry entry error/corruption and file corruption. what you have to do is download the lastest Internet Explorer. sometimes you can reinstall your same version of IE but most of the time you have to upgrade your IE...
good luck
have fun.
