Reinstall from CD, BIOS sees CDROM, win doesn't

Hi all. Just reinstalled winXPpro from slipstreamed disc, but the optical drive isn't recognised in windows. it is in the bios and cmos. everything else installed fine, no seeming problem in device manager but that may be because i've installed daemon tools which might be obscuring the lack of support (or ability to see) the actual optical drive.

Any ideas how i can resolve this? I've installed all downloadable motherboard drives.

Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 REV3.3
XP Pro SP3
have the drivers to flash the optical drive up to date but there are no drivers there to begin with, and no optical drive found.
But like i say - it'll boot to cd.

Any ideas appreciated - cheers!

did that, no joy - not on bios IDE list, device manager, windows explorer, but plugged into the only ide port i have and masters set correctly and powered up (drive opens & closes fine), and like i say, i can boot to it.
Anyone got ANY idea why this might be? What with this and my bloody usb ports constantly unrecognising my wireless adapter, i'm going out of my freaking mind!

You might try and 'reseat' the drive: Disconnect drive, Boot to windows, Shut down, Reconnect drive, & Boot back to windows. You're looking for that 'found new hardware' notice.

You need to do some registry editing relating to upper and lower filters. The link explains it all.

Boomerang is correct - I have had this happen a couple of times - mostly in Vista, but XP is not immune. The Registry fix is easy.

a simple but astute solution!
but sadly it didn't work. booooooo! i tried the 'add new hardware wizard' but this came to nought also. arse.

ok, logical. it was working fine before i reinstalled from fresh so it's (semi) safe to assume that it's working fine and the cables are seated fine.
it's not showing up in the BIOS' IDE list which is the first (and potentially key) point of failure. BUT it does boot to it, which comes before the BIOS IDE list. (I think?) So... i....need to....make the IDE channel be recognised....by...some kind of IDE driver!?
Thoughts: my board has one IDE port but doesn't seem to have an IDE controller for it. This feels like it might be the root of the problem... shouldn't there be an IDE controller with a primary & secondary channel, ideally with my optical drive on the first channel? Methinks there should be.

Right, I'll try installing the Intel IDE Controller Driver and see what happens.

didn't see those posts before replying. my idea did no good. sadly, nor did the upper & lower filters. There was no upper filter entry in that folder, there are upper filter entries in other folders in the class folder. Would removing these do any good/bad? I'm obviously reluctant to start deleting things willy-nilly.

sucks! 2 sound suggestions, neither have worked!

If you need to remove upper and lower filters get ImgBurn burning software and you will find a tool that will list the filters and you can click and remove a filter I use it all the time when I suspect filer problem or just want to see which ones are installed. BTW the software is free and about 2mb to install and its my #1 burning app bye bye nero.

nice one, cheers techmanc. Ok, no upper & lower class filters. Upper device filter driver is redbook audio filter driver, lower is IMAPI kernel driver. Anyone know if this is relevant?
Cheers for the tip - not installed my old version of Nero yet so i'll try this out and see how it compares.

Those are the normal filers you have should be no problems there. The other thing the filter tool will show is broken filter that might have files missing. Imgburn is great software but interface can be confusing at first. I recommend you read the user guides in ImgBurns forums to get up to speed faster. I also like it can be setup to use 32 char disk labels as I hate truncated labels.

Do you have another computer or just bare drive you could test with. Also you could put the problem drive in a different system t osee if it working.

Also ensure that the IDE controller on the Gigabyte is set to IDE mode. You'll find that in the BIOS under Integrated Peripherals, probably called "Onboard SATA/IDE Device."

ok this is the filters list when it's plugged into IDE2 on the ATA100 controller, which works fine. I'll put it back into the mobo IDE and post the printout from there in a bit.

Before I give that a whirl, will having my primary boot as a RAID1 SATA be affected by this? Naturally I don't want to change it if it means my drives die!

Thanks for the compliment I didn't realize you were running RAID. If you take a look in your motherboard manual on page 8, you see how the "GIGABYTE SATA2" controller is hosting both the IDE channel and the two RAID'able SATA ports. This means that the IDE port on your motherboard is connected to the same controller that your RAID1 is on, so I think you're in a Catch-22: if you switch that controller to IDE mode, your optical drive will be recognized, but your array will break.

One straightforward solution is to pick up a SATA optical drive, and run that off your motherboard's other SATA controller, which is in the Intel ICH8 southbridge.

If you didn't make any hardware or BIOS changes before reloading I would suspect the slipstreamed disc. Try loading with a vanilla Windows disc.

well, ahem, i did make one or two bios changes....insofar as I played around with various settings as seemed to make sense in order to try to make the SATAs work. In doing so, i did make the BIOS change mechBgon mentions.

@mechBgon - a catch22 indeed. Potentially a pain (alternatively, potentially a justified excuse to throw greenbacks at a new bluray drive) but since it works when plugged into the ATA controller, I figure I'll just leave it there and say 'problem solved' (or Catch23, haha). I don't kow if I'll be able to boot to this, though, although I suppose if I can't I can always plug it into the IDE for booting.

Cheers for everyone's help! Another of computing life's great annoying mysteries solved. Reason: shortsighted firmware by gigabyte. Solution: suck it up and use something else. Up next: dez continues to try to workout why his internet connection keeps failing - Yaaaay!
