A friend of mine and myself did this a while back. The result was messy and a unstable OS.

We copied both CDs to the hard drive and then substituted the Win98 cabs for the Win98SE cabs. Then we sorted through all the *inf and ini files that the setup program needs to run. I?m sorry I can?t give you exact details but I did this ages ago.

I would suggest just installing 98and then updating to SE. Its quicker and cleaner

Start the installation with the upgrade disk, it will eventually ask for proof of a previous operating system, pop in the other disk, it will read some files off of it, then tell you to reinsert the upgrade disk, and away you go. Yes, it's that simple.

The problem with that method is I am going to do the format and fdisk and start the machine with win 98 as I have some kind of prob that I cannot do this with a 98 boot disk. So can I just use win 98 to start with cd rom support fdisk and format and then stop the install process and insert the upgrade disk? I have used your method upgrading from win 3.1 to 95 but had to have dos installed first.

I'm assuming that you mean the $20 Win98SE upgrade C/D that you
purchased directly from Microsoft???
My understanding is that you have to have Win98 installed and running
before you can use the upgrade disk to get to Win98SE.
If you've reformatted your H/D and you try to boot or use setup.exe
on the Win98SE upgrade disk, it will stop and say Win98 is not
installed........Greg

That is the problem I thought there may be some way to do a reinstall after formatting without taking the 40 minutes or so for 98 to get up and running.

You should be able to borrow someones full SE disk or Retail Upgrade and use it to install or make a copy of it. It should be legal to do as you already own the software you just want an easier method of installing. In now means am I suggesting you pirate software. Should be ok to do as long as you own the software yourself.

Good suggestion. Problem I am kinda out in the boonies here everyone here that I know have store bought machines with just a emeregency reinstall CD except the ones that I built, I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and take the couple of hours to do a reinstall. Thanks all to those that responded to my thread.
