Finally a democrat idea I can get behind. There is simply NO reason to have online gaming be against federal law. As long as we keep it in country and it's regulated by a competent gaming board people are free to do what they want with their money. The provision to have it be only by casinos and tracks in business 5 years was a nod to his state but I can almost agree with that. I don't want some fly by night or shady business going on.

I can bet on horseracing live online, make direct deposits, link my bank accounts etc. Any W2 required is generated so it's reported for tax purposes. Why single out poker or other gaming?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is pushing behind the scenes for lame-duck legislation that would allow poker games over the Internet but restrict initial licenses to casinos and racetrack operators that have been in businesses at least five years.

Fine by me but tax it heavily along with drugs (including alcohol and tobacco) and prostitution.

Good news for degenerate gamblers like yourself

Can you give me one good reason why online gambling should be federally illegal when all of the "problems" given by opposition don't come to be with internet horseracing wagering?

I want to hear one good reason why it should be against federal law.

Sounds good to me. Doesn't the Canadian govt sponsor sports gambling through their pro line program?

I'm all for this. Please increase the Nevada casino gaming take and pay my taxes for me.

Makes sense. Legalize gambling and weed and you decimate the black market and bring in huge shares of tax revenue for the government.

I'm shocked, Harry Reid is pushing something I actually agree with. The ban makes absolutely no sense from any perspective. There's no way to stop people from gambling over the internet, and there's no negative downsides associated with it that are not currently already in full effect.

Those advocating heavy taxes on online poker games are going to be disappointed. Online activity can't be controlled anyway, so if you try to levy taxes on it the players will simply play somewhere else without those taxes. A small tax on the other hand might work because players might be willing to pay a small tax and be technically legal.

Pay closer attention. Any casino or HORSETRACK in the US. As a resident of KY a mere 20 minutes away from churchill downs and 30 minutes away from an indiana casino I have full access to any gaming I want. But I do like to go to vegas twice a year just for a getaway.

So, my gaming gives your state nothing. Here in KY we want nothing more than more table gaming, especially at our horsetracks.

I don't give a fuck one way or another. If a degenerate gambler like yourself wants to piss away his money who am I to say no? You earned it..or at least your wife did.

Gambling in person keeps underage people from participating. I knew kids in school who gambled away whatever they earned plus whatever cash they could steal from their parents. I can imagine what they would have done if they could have used Dad's credit card to gamble online.

The main problem with this is how it shuts out New Business and favours the established. That said, it's probably the best way to limit shens.

I'm never with Spidey but this time I am. I miss all the fish playing online poker before the prohibitive banking regulations took affect. And yes, I filed and paid my taxes on my winnings.

I too rarely would agree with Spidey, but it's ridiculous that online gambling is banned. It still exists, it's just moved onto offshore islands with little to no regulations to protect users of their sites from being cheated.

Legalize it, regulate it, tax it.

A solution to a number of problems in this country.

So what? Some of the gaming will occur at sites sponsored by NV casinos, which will increase the tax base here.

Do you get off on the personal insults? How do you know he's a degenerate gambler? Just because you don't agree with his political views? Grow the fuck up and learn to debate or else you just add to the cesspool.

Anyway, this bill should never have passed in the first place. It's a testament to how shitty politics can be that this was tacked on to the Safe Port Act, a bill to improve security measures at sea ports. How does internet gambling have anything to do with that? From what I can tell, there was no sign of the Internet banning portions in the bill that was passed by both the House and Senate, yet it was there when Bush signed it in. Yet another example of Republicans not living up to their "less government" mantra and I'm very surprised that it's a Democratic Congressman that's initiating the overturning of it.
