This might be a silly question. But if I want to buy a HD capable TV with the 16:9 ratio and watch regular TV program, will the image be squeezed since it is for a 4:3 screen? Or it can maintain the 4:3 ratio but leaves blank screen on both sides?

It should have bars on the sides. You can prolly specify in the TV's options though.

4:3 standard has side bars, all other formats definitely do not have the correct look for that content. On my CRT RP HDTV, I just keep the contrast at a reasonable level and choose black sidebars, and it works out nicely, with little fear of burn-in.

would contrast have as much to do with it as brightness? what about on a direct view crt monitor? i max out contrast but turn brightness way down when i dont need it on my nec diamondtron, would lowering contrast make it last longer too?

You should not have either at max Burn-in thread

I can live with the grey bars during the day, but at night I use black. I leave it on 4:3 stretch for my sons' cartoons, it doesn't make much difference with those.
