I have a gateway profile 1.8 all in one pc which I believe is using all laptop parts and I need to know how to tell whether I need a regular socket 370 or a mobile version socket 370. Any ideas?

the info from the gateway site:

Processor
Celeron® and Coppermine® PIII socket 370 processors, 100-megahertz (MHz) bus
Motherboard
66 megahertz or 100 megahertz bus speed. Intel Socket 370 architecture

<Gateway Tech>

Regular Socket 370, max spec officially supported is the 700MHz P3, but IIRC you can drop in any higher 100FSB processor and override the multiplier limit. If you want to use Tualatins, you need an FCPGA2 adaptor.

gateway said that? where'd you get the info? really appreciate it. so it isn't a laptop specific processor then? what does IIRC mean? So could I buy a celeron 1.2 ghz or so and drop it in (non-tualatin) ? Sorry for so many questions.. it has been >3 years since I touched the chip upgrading arena and I'm so out of touch.

Heh. No, I said it because I worked for Gateway. Still have a bit of ability to poke around in tech files - and the Profiles are old enough to be covered well. :) So no, it's not a laptop processor.

IIRC means "If I Recall Correctly" - means I'm not 100% sure, but I'm sure enough to go that route were I in that situation.

The fastest non-Tualatin Celeron was 1.1GHz. You can tell them apart by looking at the L2 cache size - Tualatins have 256KB (and significantly higher performance) and the older Coppermines are 128KB.

Just make sure that whatever you get is able to run cool enough inside the confines of the Profile. I'm assuming you still have the original heatsink - if not, you'll have to find one short enough to fit. :)
