you mean a cruiser?

i'd take a cruiser over a crotch rocket any day

i think they just look better and have more appeal to me. also, sport bikes look uncomfortable to ride i don't own or ride either though.

All in taste. I prefer more along the lines of a Ducati or 650R. Not so much a crotch rocket but still has a sporty design.

It's like saying town car vs. sports car.

That's why I asked for people to share their opinions and reasons for them :)

Btw I still love your handled. I'm reading book number 16 now (Demons Don't Dream).

Personal taste. I'm looking into getting a Honda Shadow as a starter bike in a few months (or maybe next Spring.) My parents both drive Harley cruisers, but I'll be damed if I spend $16K on a bike. =P

I believe a crotch rocket is a "sport bike". Whereas a "regular motorcycle" would be the leather 'n chrome Harley Davidson "hog" type motorcycle. That's dumbing it down, as both types have lots of variation, but there you have it.

I prefer the traditional type of cruiser or chopper. I don't have one and won't ever get one because of the safety issue (my wife is very against it, and it's just not that important to me), but a hog just looks cooler and sounds better, and in some situations allows you to lean back rather than forward. I think a sport bike would be fun, but I probably wouldn't want to ride it as often as a cruiser.

That's pretty much my thoughts on it. For touring I would rather have...a touring bike. Something like a Harley or equivalent as it would be more comfortable. But for something to just dumb around town in, i'd prefer a crotch rocket.

Cruiser looks better and they're generally easier to ride around town due to lower center of gravity.

There's more than just sport bikes and cruisers. You've got your "standard" bike - a more upright riding position and less farings. Someone already mentioned Touring bikes (and sport-touring), but then there's dual-sport bikes too.

I have a standard. I like the more upright position, it's more comfortable for me. Cruisers are too long for my tastes (and too big and heavy).

There are some cool standards available overseas. There's not a lot of interest in them here, so they don't get imported.

I'm already thinking about my next bike. It'll probably either be a V-Strom 650 or a Moto-Guzzi Breva 750:

I've driven both. I own a Yamaha V-Star 1100 "cruiser". My brother has a Kawasaki ZZR600 Ninja. They're both nice bikes, but totally different machines.

Driving style - My bike has tons of low end torque. It's quite comfortable just crusing around without lots of throttle. What the Ninja lacks in low end grunt, it makes up for in high-revving power ... but you have to rev it to get there. Not much fun for cruising around town, but a blast to drive out on some open winding roads.

Passengers - HUGE factor. Yes, you can technically take a passenger on a sport bike. She will most likely hate you for it. My g/f can't stand being on the back of a sport bike. And if you have to make a quick stop, she will slam into you, and your family jewels will slam in to the gas tank.

Comfort - My bike is comfortable up to about 75 mph. Above that, the wind really beats me up. I could put a windshield on my bike, but I don't like the look. The Ninja doesn't get comfortable until about 70. At that point, enough wind is hitting you to relieve the pressure on your arms. At around 90-100 is where you start tucking the tank. At 130, you know if it's comfortable or not because you're concentrating on not turning into a grease spot on the road.

Everything else comes down to style preference - looks, sound, etc.

my $.02 from riding both kinds.

howabout a tenspeed?
i apologize in advance, im listening to Coheed and Cambria right now and actually thats the song that is playing ;)

it comes down to: want the feeling of power between your legs? or do you want a beast in between your legs? I'd equate the crotch rocket to being power since they go so fast, but the motorcycle being muscle since they are oh so beastly
;)

i'd pick the crotch rocket because I like speed and handling of them. but alas, I don't see myself ever owning a bike, except for maybe sometime in the future for cruising around. im making efforts to afford a Challenger a few years after they are introduced to the market.

crotch rockets all the way - sleek design, incredible performance, and they dont cost an arm and a leg.

I consider my bike a 'regular' motorcycle. It has an upright seating position so I can take it on trips and not want to kill myself after riding it 15 miles. I just put 750 miles on it this weekend, I can't wait for the nice weather to stick around!

Crotch Rockets are NOT first-time-rider bikes. They suck at turning. They are too much power for a novice to control.

Like I said, get something practical like a car. If you want a bike, get a Touring style bike.
