Electronic Battleship is hardware, no? ;)

Anyway, my 6 1/2 year old boy wants the game Battleship for Christmas. My wife is of the opinion that the regular, "classic" version is what he'd prefer. While I am thinking that the Electronic version is superior.

Your opinion?

(ok, so maybe this isn't exactly General Hardware... I'll spruce it up a bit.)

Also, I heard that Cyrix is making a new Battleship game. Any truth to that rumor?

(There!)

Electronic battleship is cool but you have to program the damn thing which can take a while. If you want your kid to become a CSCI whiz then get him that, on the other hand if he has a bad case of ADD I would stick with the old school version. (Old school being a relative term because I had the electronic battleship back in '85)

You have to program it? I only had the original version, where you make the explosion noises yourself. ;)

Yep, Cyrix is using their new 1.2Ghz processor. It only takes about 30 minutes to calculate and execute the move:p

Do you really want another gadget that requires batteries and makes annoying noises? Go for the original. Better yet get some paper and pencils. With that one can play battleship and hundreds of other games plus draw and make things and generally be creative using the brain instead of being a zombie. My kids are gonna hate me! No they won't cause they won't know what they're "missing" without a TV. Hehe. Seriously though, creative toys like blocks, Lego, Mechano, drawing supplies and stuff are better. For multiplayer fun and strategy chess is classic. There are lots of games like that that do not require specialized claptrap. Death to technology! Oops, what forum is this again? :p

OG Battleship all the way.

Auric, agree w/ you on the Lego, etc., but chess? Gotta have Risk and Axis&Allies. We played them all the time in like 5th grade, over a whole weekend or something.

Every guy's GOTTA' have Lego!! Man... I think over the years I'm only NOW beginning to overtake the amount of time spend with Legos on my computer instead. :)
There's your answer: Lego Battleship! ...and you can really smash them when you win! :D

axis and allies, we played with two boards set so that you couldn't see the other guy's board, made the game a lot tougher when you couldn't see the massive tank buildup outside moscow or the mustangs raiding from gibraltar (no one ever checked there heheehh). great game.

Hmm, 2 seperate boards...
that would be interesting. And we had 3 sets between my friends, so that would have been possible.

heheh, gibraltar....

Oh lordie I almost split my gut from this one :)

Anyways, stick with the old school version cause you can play it across the room or better yet with walkie talkies or over the phone even... ehehe

Zoinks! I was a Risk freak too until Axis & Allies came out then I was an A&A freak! We spent hours with that. Then friends got other ones in the series: Fortress America and Caesar (?). The double board thing sounds kooky. There was at least one unoffical A&A PC adaptation that I still have around plus the offical titled release which I never played but have seen on the Zone. These days I am really liking Sudden Strike for a cool WWII strategy/RTS but now you have me twitching to play A&A again! Games like that are more fun in a lot of ways with the board and pieces than on the PC, even if your friends were there hooked up via LAN, I imagine.
