Registry problems

I was having problems with DirectX and saw a posting by Lou from Screensavers and he said to delete the key, reboot, and it would go back to 8.1. Well, I think I deleted more than the key, or the information was bad.

I tried to reinstall 9 but got the error:
--------------------
[03/20/08 19:46:19] module: dxupdate(Mar 5 2008), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 175, function: GetDXVersion

Failed API: RegOpenKeyEx()
Error: (2) - The system cannot find the file specified.

Current DirectX may be a older version which does not have directx key in the registry.

It was much longer, but you get the idea. Yes, I was stupid enough to make this change before backing up my registry.

Is there a way to get that back that anybody knows of, or am I doing a reinstall? I've been looking but haven't had much luck as of yet. (I used some directxdoctor thingy and it said I had version 0.0 installed. And, there are a bunch of old directx dll files laying around.)

TIA

Probably reinstalling, but if you know of anything please post it. Thanks.

P.S. I found another site saying the same thing, and I did delete the FOLDER like they said...

Uninstall DirectX 9

Officially, the only way to get rid of DirectX is to either use System Restore to roll back to the time when you still did not have this version of DirectX on your system, or to reinstall your system. Many third party uninstallers are also available but most of them are buggy and cannot be recommended without proper testing. Using one of these may cause you to end up with more problems. So, the best way to get rid of DirectX is to remove it manually.

To do this, open the Registry Editor by running Regedit from Start > Run. Next, navigate to the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX

Here, delete the DirectX folder, exit the Registry Editor, and restart your XP computer. During the system startup, after the restart, your system will reinstall DirectX 8.1 that is originally shipped with the Windows XP operating system. To confirm this, run the dxdiag command from Start > Run. The command will open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool utility. This utility provides you with a lot of information about DirectX installed on your computer along with the version currently installed on your system.

911paramedic,

Have you tried System Restore? Not to get rid of DirectX, but just to get your machine back to just before when you changed the registry. Just open System Restore and find a good Restore Point. That will take you back to a previous version of the registry. If you can do that, you should be back in business...

System restore was off, I did think of that though.

Problems were greater than directX, it seems as though my mobo took a crash on me so I ended up spending the better part of 1500 buying new parts. (mobo was old ASUS, nothing but hard drives and DVD could really be salvaged.) It was an old AGP system, at least now I'm going to have a computer that is current...for the next five minutes at least.

Thanks for trying to help.

911paramedic,

You're welcome, glad I could try to help...

I'm sure you'll be much happier with the new system. AGP isn't dead yet, but quite long in the tooth, eh? You're right, the new system should be good for at least 5 minutes 🙂

Good luck with it, Noel
