Did this start happening shortly after you upgraded anything like your ram or overclocking anything?

It could be related to a bad piece of memory which would be relatively easy to test for.

However it could be related to many other things as well. I would suggest trying your ram one piece at a time first. If that fails to solve the problem I suggest backing up your data and formatting your hard drive.

When you are formatting, take out all of your adapter cards except for your video card and one piece of ram. If everything goes okay install your adapters one at a time. If that works throw your last piece of ram in.

This will determine if the problem is related to a piece of hardware or if your current install of widows somehow bacame corrupt.

Hey michael, I've got virtually the same prob. I just put together kk266-r, 1.2 Athlon w/266fsb,
ATI AIW radeon, currently using onboard C-media sound to Creative DTT2500 setup. Used KK266 FAQ
to install. Radeon from cd failed install with ikernal error & MMC install hung. Tried dnload
from ati, failed also. Tried again, appeared to work, except for same ikernal error. Enabled onboard sound & started to install apps. Ran into problems, so formatted & started again. Everything seemed to go OK this time except same ikernal error on ATI radeon install. Ignored it,
installed network, downloaded all W98se updates. Still seemed to be stable. Using PQ 6, created
hidden partition & copied C to it.

Shortly after that, tried to Ghost C to image. Gho kept hanging 27% through at a file called....
ATFCHTXX.HLX. Looked at file in Editpad, only could identify as ATI Technologies March 2, 1999
version H6.01. Also around this time started getting same Registry errors on boot. Either cold or restart. No BSOD, but caught in continous loop. C-A-D to cancel Registry checker, allows boot.
About a 1000 cold boots later isolated problem to when ATIPTA & ATIPOLAB are startup enabled
simultantaneously with C-media mixer. Shut off either both ATI's or C-media allows clean boot.

Boot probs. are only after several clean boots (not doing anything other than cold boot & shutdown). Using PQ, booted up to C copy. No problems at all. Back to orig. C & probs. come back.
Used PQ to delete orig C & used copied C to recreate orig. C, but did not choose option to shred
Orig. C when I deleted it. Booted to new orig. C & same prob. back. (Did I make that understandable?)

Now have e-mail into ATI support, but no answer back. I think this is more an ATI problem than
onboard C-media since I also have the GHOST image problem & the ikernal failure. I also noticed that after the reg. error appears, that if I boot into DOS & try to run scanreg /fix, it pases,
but prob. is still there. Scanreg with a restore, still there. Won't go away unti C-A-D, end task
scanreg & continue normal boot. Sys. runs fine until next boot, same prob. Do 2 boots with C-A-D
& end task scanreg & OK for the next couple of boots.

I know this doesn't answer you, but it either might give you some ideas or we might find what we share in common on our systems.

UPDATE: Since my last post, I've found out that any software I install, that puts an entry
into MSCONFIG startup causes the error accessing the registry on bootup. If I let the boot cycle continue for 3 to 6 times, then it will eventually clear itself. I've used regedit &
reg cleaner both, numerous times trying to clear this problem. This is with ATI enabled in
startup. ATI finally replied & gave a procedure to uninstall all ATI components. The ??? I have
is if I've done 2 formats & clean installs, what would be different about this one. Both installs gave the ikernal error.
