Registry Cleaners - Are They SAFE?

Are they safe to us, say with an OS like Windows XP? I know there are some things in my registry that were not deleted when software was uninstalled, and I would like to do some spring cleaning.
Anyone recommend a reliable registry cleaner? Or is it still wise to back it up, and clean it manually?

I use jv16 powertools and easycleaner (quick search in google) with XP Pro, no problems here. It has definitely cleaned junk and solved some minor problems for me regarding orphaned registry settings like autorun and such.

The one I`m talking about is made by Jouni Vuorio (JV) .There are lots of reg cleaners around but not many that are free.

While I'm sure a lot of people have success with registry cleaners I don't trust them and instead prefer to do everything manually.

Yes, they are definitely safe. If you don't feel comfortable allowing it to automatically edit your registry, you can always view the problem for yourself and take care of it with your own method.

Regcleaner is good, but I really like the one that comes with Norton Utilities. It is the one I use, and I always let it automatically determine what the problem is. It has never caused me any problems. In general, Norton software is of very high quality.

On thing is be moderate. I used to always erase everything i possibly thought i could, turning off all restrictions and such... but i stopped doing that after the 20th reformatting where the system gets a bit quirky after messing with the registry

Overall, I think it's pretty safe, especially if you go over the list before you clean it out. I've had a few minor problems in the past though. For example, few months ago, after I ran Regcleaner, I couldn't right-click and open expanded shortcut folders in my start menu. It was kind of a nuisance because that's how I usually access my mp3s. I've never had a problem with the Norton registry cleaner though.
