Hey,

I've just built a new system:

abit be6-II running bios behrv
p2-400 cpu
128 megs of pc-100 RAM (toshiba)
maxtor 10 gig HD
SB Live! value card
Voodoo 3 3000 pci card
Mitsumi unk speed cd-rom
Asantefast 10/100 network card
Windows 98

I was attempting to install a Napster, and when I rebooted, I received a "Registry checker" error, and windows rebooted and fixed the problem. (well sort of. It also made me have to reinstall all my programs over again) I installed IE 5.01 again, and began to get multiple Illegal Operations (almost all error messages where different), as well as a few more registry checker errors. Does this have something to do with any of my hardware? I guess the only way I can tell is by trying to reinstall everything again... But I was just wondering if anyone knew the main cause of these types of errors. Maybe a bad Hard Drive? Thanks in advance.

Hi Marc4, Oh my...... I have just about exact same problem as yours!!!! lol. In my case "If and Only If" I install the "typical" windows98SE installation, I automatically(absolutely guaranteed) get same problem registry checker file system error. You didn't see the worst part yet im about to tell you, I loose "EVERTHING" my drivers for video, hard drive, sound card, the rest of plug n play installed softwares are all GONE as if it forgot what I have installed or saved. I have Abit BE6-2 also. PIII 800EB. I thought it had to do with me not having a bootdisk specifically for win98SE for start-up files but I maybe wrong. I donno.. But I can tell you this, try wiping out everything in your hard drive and install your Windows in "compact" mode and see. I have no registry problem at all with this kind of installation. I donno why...

I had the exact same problem with a machine I built for a friend. It drove me absolutely nuts trying to figure it out.

Ended up being the memory. I had run a memory diagnostic program and everything.

I see.. yes I was thinking about that too. I emailed to Microsoft so when I get answer from them, I'll report about it.
