Registering an SB6141 with Comcast

This must be a common problem. I purchased a refurbished SB6141 from an online merchant who sells refurbished modems -- not from an individual on e-Bay. It came boxed, new cables, protective clear peeloff skin etc. I'm pretty sure the power supply was new too. Modem itself looks brand new -- not a scuff or scratch on it.

Today I set about replacing an older SB6121 with this modem. Did the walkthrough with a Comcast tech, gave him the MAC, serial number, model etc. At the end he said that MAC was registered to another Comcast account and there was nothing he could do. I don't even have the sales invoice anymore, and even if I did the refurbisher wouldn't know who the original owner was.

As I said, this must happen all the time. How do I get the modem registered to my Comcast account? Would hate to think I bought a $60 brick.

Comcast was no help. They said I would have to contact the original owner.

If the modem is already registered on the Comcast network, then the tech is right. The original owner has to tell Comcast to remove it from their account before you can activate it on yours.
