Registering a domain Qs

My friends dad is opening a little shop/store soon and he's going to get a webpage. He basically just wants to register the domain now so it doesn't get taken, and make or pay someone to do the webpage later.

I'm assuming there all hundreds of companies out there that will register your domain name... are any of them better than the others? Could someone recommend one?

I've never done it before, but id guess you register the domain (www.domain.com) through a company, and then you create/host a webpage, and through the company, you log in to you account or something and redirect actual webspace to your domain? Then when you type in domain.com for example, it redirects you to the actual webspace where it's being hosted. Correct?

So I could basically make a little coming soon webpage and host it on my personal webspace or whatever, and then register whatever domain name he wants, and redirect it to my webspace? I would be able to log in to the companies website and edit the info there, or do I have to do some html trick or something?

Thanks in advance!

Just search here for hosting. You'll find oodles of threads.

This comes up weekly, if not daily.

But, namecheap.com and godaddy.com are the two biggies for inexpensive registration of domains.

For hosting, check out ripplehost.com or addaction.net (I kinda prefer the latter).

Sorry....too lazy to link right now.

Do a search, and you'll find some threads on here, and hot deals about cheap places for hosting. If it's a BUSINESS, then I would advise going with someone better than RippleHost or some other cheapy place like that. (Not that it's a bad company, but for a business you want something more reliable, and that can address concerns quicker.)

And yeah, use namecheap. Go do that now! It's cheap, and easy. Go ahead and reserve it.

Yep...you got it.

So you get a domain name (domain.com)
When you have your server, you will get DNS names (DNS = Domain Name Server).
DNS basically maps your hosting-server with your domain.com address.

So you need to:
-set up a server/hosting somewhere and put up a simple "coming soon" site
-register the domain name and tell the company (or if available, use their online control-panel) the DNS names of your server (primary and secondary - your website hosting company should have that)

That's it.
I use http://www.needa.com
They're fairly cheap and very responsive (and have a good online Control Panel where you can change all necessary options). Maybe not AS cheap as some very low-budget sites, but I think they're very reliable.

Alright, thanks guys.

I have a couple more Qs on addaction.net. I assume the 10GB bandwidth is per month? ...and, does godaddy. addaction, and namecheap have ads? I don't want any of those.

Register.com which is an ICANN accredited registrar should be used to register a business/company/corporations domain.

NameCheap.com for all others (I have 21 and counting domains registered with NameCheap they're awesome).

Yes 10GB bandwidth is per month which is quite a bit of bandwidth. I use maybe 700MB per month for my forums (which are hosted on AddAction.net)

AddAction.net is a professional web hosting provider, not a freebie site like Geocities or Tripod. So no annoying ad banners, SPAM email, or anything like that.

Don't forget to use their 6 months FREE coupon code.

I'd like to know this as well, I've used godaddy for all my domains and have had no problems.

Zeero & csaddict - Read this in particular Soybomb's post dated 07/08/2003 10:20 PM.

If you legally own the rights to a business/corporations name and register a domain, do yourself a favor and register it with Register.com

Whatever you do, don't register with Network Solutions. I second your registration with Register.com, or even Tucows. Both of those aren't going anywhere and I would think that GoDaddy is likely to be just as stable. I use Bulkregister, have been for years now, but they require a membership and have an associated fee. There are cheaper services than Bulkregister but I signed up with them when Registrar services first pulled out of NetSol a few years ago. They have terrific service but unless you are registering many domains, a membership is not worthwhile.

Oh, did I say stay away from Network Solutions? Just in case I wasn't clear: Stay away from Network Solutions!

66FMC - If you're not going to register a business/corporate name then definitely register with GoDaddy or NameCheap.

NameCheap.com offers a lot including
  • ? FREE URL Forwarding/Framing with no ads
  • ? FREE Domain Parking (Coming Soon) Page
  • ? FREE E-mail Forwarding (you@yourdomain.com)
  • ? FREE Dynamic DNS
  • ? FREE Transfers
  • ? FREE Full Control over your domain
  • ? FREE Change of ownership
  • ? FREE Security features prevents hijacking
  • ? Your Information will be visible in WHOIS
  • ? Consolidated Domain Management
Manage all your domains in one place

However GoDaddy.com is an ICANN accredited registrar.

I disagree. (no disrespecting the Rossman of course :D )

no seriously though, use namecheap.com or godaddy for all purposes because:

2 things though. Godaddy is a *new* ICANN registrar and thus companies that already registered with register(200 bux to transfer out?!?!??!) and network solutions(UGH) have registered their domain for like 10 years and their IT staff usually just renews with the same company (in my humble experience) simply because they are lazy and of course the following motto: "If it aint broke, dont fix it!". Plus, it's not like the it department pays out of pocket so they usually dont care if they shell out 35 a year for network solutions or wherever.

SECOND of all: as stated in the other thread, people fear that namecheap (enom reseller) goes belly up? (wont happen any time soon, they are big enough to be a ICANN registrar if they choose to be but they have a nice relationship with Enom so they choose not to) But if heaven-forbids, namecheap goes out, all domains get "pushed" back to Enom which is also ICANN registered so you would deal with Enom.

stay away from register or network solutions i say.

Thanks for all the info again.

What features does godaddy have? Other than the 5 things under the price on their website, I haven't been able to find anymore info.

Does godaddy have a nice control panel? I will probably use namecheap for my domain, but I have a feeling my friends dad will want to go with godaddy just because of the privacy option.

I've never seen GoDaddy's control panel but they are ICANN accredited (NameCheap is not) and they have the privacy option.

OK, I have one last question...

It looks like I'll be going with godaddy for my domain name, and addaction for webhosting.

Do I need to create one or the other accounts 1st in order to set them up?

For example, do I need to have the DNS in order to register a domain, or have a domain to open an account with addaction?

Thanks in advance...

Follow these steps in this order:
1) NameCheap.com - register domain
2) AddAction.net - web hosting
3) After you receive your "welcome to AddAction.net" e-mail, go to namecheap.com click members login modify the DNS name servers as explained in your welcome e-mail. Select USE CUSTOM NAMESERVERS and paste the name servers (in order) from the welcome e-mail into namecheap.com's website.

STOP and wait 24 hours

4) Within 24 hours your website should be propogated and reachable by www.yourdomain.com
5) Go to www.yourdomain.com/cpanel to access your control panel where you setup e-mail accounts, FTP, etc.
6) Your FTP will be ftp.yourdomain.com and your email incoming/outgoing email servers will be mail.yourdomain.com and mail.yourdomain.com
7) Webmail is pre-installed on your account, access it by going to www.yourdomain.com/webmail
8) Don't forget the cPanel's auto install scripts which automatically installs any 14 popular scripts with a few clicks of your mouse

OK, I lied. I have one more question....

You have to PAY to sign up with search engines like google, msn, and yahoo? Godaddy.com wants $29/year per url to sign you up with 10 or so search engines for your website.

Is this just the fee for labor, and can I do it myself for free?
