Registering a domain name; what are the restrictions with .com/.net/.biz/.edu/.info/etc?

I am strongly considering registering a domain name with Godaddy.com. I own the name for 10 years for about 100 bucks...that sounds good to me. Being that I will have a small server at my home (when I get around to putting all the parts together

What are the rules concerning the name extensions? I know that to have a .edu, you have to be an accredited institution or something along those lines, but what about the rest? I know .com and .net are pretty much identical, but I've never even heard of .info and .biz.

Can someone please explain this to me? Thanks. :)

if you have $, they don't care who you are

but it might make sense to get one that matches what you are doing, or get all the extensions for your domain so that if people get mixed up, they still make it to your site

Thanks guys. I've heard and read about ensuring that you pick a Domain Name that matches what you're doing. IE. Computers.com, motorcycles.com, etc.

The problem is that I have about 4 main hobbies...that don't match up or are in the same category at all! So, I may just pick a crazy name out of thin air. I have a few in mind already.

I've been looking at a .ws extension. It's new, apparently it stands for "web server." And is aimed at the private user i.e. someone like myself that just wants their own domain.

I thought about getting a Firstname.Lastname domain name, but then there goes privacy and anonominity right out the window.

edu=educational institution
gov=government
mil=military
info=anyone
com=anyone(should be company though)
org=anyone(should be non profit organization)
net=anyone(should be internet service provider)

cheesy new ones that are part of the dot-bomb hype:
ws=web site (anyone)
biz=business(anyone)
info=information(anyone)
tv=television(anyone)
more, but didn't want to take the time to list them ;)

.ws is a country code, it's probably Somoa.
.tv is also a country code but I'm not sure which one.

Your best bets are .net, .org and .com. Until we can get ICANN replaced anway.

Allrighty then; scrap the .ws idea. :) I'll stick w/a .com or .net or .org. I'm not an organization, but I don't make any money, either. :D Thanks guys.
