Just received a new (Legal) copy of MS Office CD.
Since I plan to upgrade/build with a different MOBA, am tempted to install this LEGALLY PURCHASED software in my current system but not register it.
What is the downfall of NOT Registering it, even IS IT POSSIBLE?will be able to complete the install?
I do not care for upgrades if that is the only problem.
Your comments greatly appreciated.

OK, if you don't care about updates, don't register. However, some of them are critical security updates. Your choice.

Register or Activate?

You do not have to register it and it will not affect updates. I never register any of my products and I get all the updates. I currently run Office 2007.

If this is Office 2003 or 2007, you need to activate it though.
I think if you do not activate it, after some time, it will go into a limited functionality mode.

Is this retail or OEM?

Navid, thank you for your posting, you are right on the mark, after my previous postings went ahead and installed it, typed the key, all went OK BUT, after I declined to register a warning came telling me could use it "24 times" as unregistered, after that "..will loose functionality, and will function only as a viewer"
Since am in the process of migrating to a new desktop, I do not want to do that, so I restore my computer to prior install and will have to wait to install on the new one.
This is Office 2007
It is a Student/Faculty version.
Any suggestion?
Really hate this control, I am happy using Office.Org but unfortunately I have a very limited need for Excel formulas, some of the prgms I use will only work on Excel, not any other spreadsheet.

Look carefully on the label that has the product key on it. It must be on the CD cover.
Do you see letters FPP or OEM?

If it is FPP, it is retail and you can install it on more than one PC as long as you have it installed on one PC at a time.
So, you would be able to install it now on your PC and later when you have your new desktop, you uninstall it from this one and install it on the new one.

If it fails to activate on the new desktop, you will be given a toll-free number to call. You just call and explain and they will activate it for you over the phone.

If it is OEM, you are better off waiting for the new desktop.

Hi Navid
Been a Student or Faculty Copy I think is a Third class, as on the DVD is stamped "Not for retail or OEM Distribution"
The product Key has the numbers/letters BUT no FPP or OEM.
Looks like I will have to wait?

I did not mean that you look for those letters as a part of the key code.
They are written as a separate code near the key code or the product name.

This is explained as a part of the end user license agreement.

If you still have office installed, open Outlook and click on help and click on "About Microsoft Outlook".
Then, click on "View the Microsoft Software License Terms".
Or, start an install and you should be given the license agreement to agree on.

Right, I Uninstalled, actually I did a full Backup/Restore with True Image Acronis to prior install, as did not want to leave anything on this computer,( I do that as a routine to any new program install just in case).
Seems to me will just wait to install on the new computer (I am almost finish with the new build), at that point will check the type of license terms as you suggest, perhaps if I am lucky is a more generous license, one thing is certain, that is registration is a MUST.
I will post at that time what I find just to let you know, I really appreciated your time and help.
