Region free DVD players

I am just curious to see if there are any stand alone DVD players that are region free or software programs that will allow me to play imported DVDs or domestic.

I use software called DVD Genie. Basically, it resets the counter in Windows and in the Windows DVD software (I'm using WinDVD). Of course you'll also need a region-free DVD-ROM. I have a Samsung 5x (made in '99 prior to "regions") that works great.

I was looking for a stand-alone DVD player just recently, and in my search I discovered there are outfits that take certain DVD players, modify them to be "region free", and then sell them via the internet. I imagine they work ok, but you can surely kiss the mfg. warranty goodbye on these units (though that might not be a concern for some people). Just do a Yahoo or Google search for "region free DVD" and you'll find a lot of them.

pretty much all DVD players are firmware upgradeable and can be flashed with a hacked version, even the standalone players- there's quite a few sites with firmware hacks available, you have to burn them on a cdr and insert them into the player.
