Regedit will not stay open Please help!

I have a virus and found a solution to getting rid of it. Here is the problem. When I go to start/run and typ regedit... the program opens and closes before I can use it. Why is it doing this and how do I get it to stop. Also, does anyone know where to download a FREE virus scan???
