Networking thread for the Unemployed - it started as a great way for people to give each other emotional support, and to relate to each other in ways that are normally very difficult to do... now it is more of a conglomeration of a WHOLE LOT of different things, and just like the forum needed an upgrade, so does this thread.
I think there are a few problems with the thread - but I do believe they can be remedied
First the problems:
1) this thread is incredibly depressing... I am not going to count the number of unemployed people, but its tremendous.
2) its extremely long - who wants to sift through the ENTIRE thing to find someone qualified for anything?
3) I am subscribed to it and I get an email every time its updated
4) There is no great deviation between a post for job offerings, and a post for the actual unemployed people - they all look the same.
Possible Solutions:
1) Create a new section of the forum strictly for occupation-related material... maybe call it "Employed?" I dunno...
2) Create 2 new sections of the forum - one called "Resumes/Job Applicants" and the other called "Job Offerings"
3) Split the current thread manually - take all the posts that are sob stories and put them in one place, put all the ones that list skills and desires in another thread, and then finally those offering jobs in another thread
4) Just delete the whole thing
5) Lock it and keep it for archival purposes
If any of the new suggestions are used, the one thing to keep in mind is - "If John Doe says he needs a job, and he finally gets one - he should update the thread" - just like anyone else does in the Deal forum (citing the deal as dead...) for example. This way, the forum could be pruned of those people who ended up with jobs - OR another section could be created called success stories - which would be a very POSITIVE change to the Anandtech forums in general - you could even post on the main anandtech page new success stories everyday (like the way you sometimes post hot deals of the day)
Of course, these are strictly my opinions, and my intentions are not to offend anyone at all. If I have done so, please accept my humblest apologies, and I would be happy to talk to whomever at length if necessary...
